July 10, 2024BetMGM and Caesars Ready to Launch in D.C.
July 11, 2024Indianapolis Colts defensive end Laiatu Latu is a slight favorite to win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award for the 2024-25 season at odds of +450 at Caesars. Just behind Latu is Minnesota Vikings linebacker Dallas Turner at odds of +480. It is a bit of a drop after the first two favorites with Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell next at odds of +950. Also listed at odds of less than 20-1 are Terrion Arnold, Jared Verse, Byron Murphy, Darius Robinson, Chop Robinson, Nate Wiggins and Edgerrin Cooper. Pass rushers should be favored in NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year odds, as four of the last five winners have been pass rushers. The last linebacker to win the award was Darius Leonard in 2018 and then you have to go back to Luke Kuechly in 2012. Let’s look at the latest odds, the top contenders, some of the history and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year picks.

Top Contenders
Laiatu Latu +450
Latu probably would have been a first round pick a year ago if he had entered the draft but he stayed in school and should have a big year for the Colts in 2024. He generated pressure on over 18% of his snaps at UCLA in his career. The Colts had a big need on their defensive line and Latu could put up some nice numbers this season.
Dallas Turner +480
The Vikings look to have a talented player in Turner but he is very young and it may take him some time to make a huge impact with Minnesota. The good news for Turner is that he has Brian Flores as defensive coordinator and Flores loves to blitz. Taking Turner at this price does seem risky considering Minnesota also has Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard on the front line who could make an impact.
Quinyon Mitchell +950
The Eagles drafted Mitchell to take over one of their cornerback spots. He played college football for Toledo and he was a two-time all-conference selection. Cornerbacks rarely win Defensive Rookie of the Year, so it is hard to make a big case for taking Mitchell.
Terrion Arnold +1000
Arnold is a cornerback who should have success with the Detroit Lions. He did everything at Alabama and was a big-time returner once he had his hands on the ball. The Lions badly need Arnold to make an impact, as their defensive secondary was a problem. I think Arnold has more value than does Mitchell in terms of NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year odds.
Jared Verse +1000
Verse plays for the Rams and he has tremendous talent. He should get a lot of chances to make plays on a defense that got 50 pressures last season from rookie Byron Young.
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year History
Will Anderson won this award last year for the Houston Texans, while Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner won it for the Jets two years ago. Gardner showed that cornerbacks can win this award, but history has shown that cornerbacks are not good bets overall, as he was just the third cornerback to win the award since Charles Woodson won in 1998. It should be noted that 19 of the last 21 winners of Defensive Rookie of the Year were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft.
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Picks
It is hard to predict which rookies will have the greatest impact and while I don’t normally take favorites, I think Latu offers the best value. I don’t like Turner’s situation in Minnesota and I can’t see a cornerback winning it. Perhaps this is the year to take a longshot. Chop Robinson is listed with odds of 16-1 and he should get some attention in Miami. The top two edge rushers for Miami, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb suffered injuries last season and could miss the early part of this season. If Robinson plays well, he could take one of their spots. Another longshot worth a look is Darius Robinson at 14-1. He will play for the Arizona Cardinals who have the ability to get to quarterbacks, as their head coach Jonathan Gannon was known for his defenses generating pressure when in Philadelphia.Check out the latest NFL odds at Caesars.
