The league leading Colorado Avalanche travel west on Wednesday to take on the Vegas Golden Knights, who currently sit in first place in the Pacific division.
These two teams are the top contenders to bring home the Stanley Cup according to SugarHouse online sportsbook. The Avalanche are the favorites with +475 odds to win the title while the Golden Knights are just behind at +700.
Colorado boasts the best record in the NHL at 34-8-4 while Vegas enters the matchup at 28-17-3. The Avalanche have been on fire of late, posting a nearly perfect 9-0-1 mark over their last 10 contests.
Vegas hasn’t been quite as good, winning just five of their last 10 matchups. They’ve outscored their opponents by just 19 goals on the year, but still own the top spot in their respective division. They sit one point up on the Calgary Flames.
That same Calgary team just beat the Golden Knights 6-0 in Vegas’s last time on the ice, so they’ll be sure to bring their “A” game as they look to create separation in the standings ahead of playoff time.

The matchup presents viewers with a chance to watch two championship favorites battle it out on the ice.
To date, the Avalanche have been the cream of the NHL crop, ripping off 34 wins in 46 contests. They’re the only team in the league with single digit regulation losses, falling just eight times. They’ve been an NHL best bet since the turn of the calendar.
Colorado hasn’t lost a game in regulation since the start of January, posting an incredible 17-0-2 record. That run has helped them build a notable lead in the Western Conference standings.
Colorado ranks second in the league in goals scored, putting the puck in the net more than four times a game. They lead the NHL in goal differential at +59.
Vegas hasn’t been quite as dominant, standing just 12th in the league in goal differential at +19. The Golden Knights haven’t had trouble getting the puck in the back of the net, but they have struggled to stop opponent scoring.
They average 3.4 goals a night but have given up 3.0 goals a game to their counterparts.
Despite the defensive troubles, Vegas still leads the Pacific division. And according to the NHL betting odds, they present Colorado with the toughest opposition to a Stanley Cup crown.
NHL Betting Trends
Colorado, like most teams, plays better at home than on the road. The Avalanche boast an insane 21-2-2 record on their home ice compared to a 13-6-2 mark away from Ball Arena. They’re 11-10 against the spread when playing on the road.
Vegas, however, is a team that’s posted a better mark on the road. The Golden Knights are just 14-10-2 at home compared to 14-7-1 away from T-Mobile Arena. They’re just 9-17 against the spread at home.
Surprisingly, playing in Vegas may give the Avalanche an advantage.
Colorado actually enters as the underdog in this matchup. They boast +102 money line odds compared to Vegas’s -124 odds at SugarHouse.
The Golden Knights have posted a 20-11-1 mark as a betting favorite this season with a 12-20 record against the spread.
On the inverse, Colorado is 1-2 as an underdog, covering the spread once in those three matchups.
For the year, Colorado is 24-22 against the spread in its 46 games this season. Vegas is 22-26 this year against the NHL betting lines.
Following a win, the Avalanche are 24-5-4, with a 17-16 mark against the spread.
Following a loss, the Golden Knights are 12-7-1 with an 11-9 mark against the spread. Vegas lost its last game to Calgary, 6-0.
The place where there may be the most value, though, is on the point total. Vegas has seen 27 of its 48 games go over the total. Colorado has posted a 27-16-3 over/under record this year.
Taking the over could be profitable.
NHL Prediction
It’s hard to bet against the Avalanche, here. They’ve been absolutely rolling over the last two months of the season, winning 17 of their last 19 contests.
But Vegas has absolutely owned this series of late. The Golden Knights have won each of the last five meetings dating back to last year’s NHL Playoffs. That includes a 3-1 win earlier this year.
They’ll also get the luxury of playing on a week’s rest while Colorado takes on Dallas tonight in Denver. Look for Vegas to escape with a close home win and improve their standing in the Western Conference race.
