July 29, 2024The move to the Southeastern Conference over a decade ago was viewed as a mistake by people close to the Missouri Tigers football program. Sure there was some success early on, but the conference was much different back then. Starting with the 2015 season the Tigers failed to post a winning SEC record and had just two overall winning campaigns, that is until last year. Proving they can win in the SEC, the Tigers went 6-2 in conference games, won 10 regular season contests and beat Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. Plenty of firepower returns on offense and a manageable schedule has the Tigers’ win total set at 9.5 at BetMGM.
Regular Season Wins for the Missouri Tigers
Over 9.5 ( +130 )
Under 9.5 ( -155 )
The Tigers were a solid all-around team last year with their only losses to two of the best in the SEC. They were upended 49-39 by LSU and lost at Georgia in what was a three-point game early in the final quarter. They were one of four teams to score more than 20 points on the Dawgs’ defense. It took a little bit longer for Eli Drinkwitz to turn the Missouri program around after leading Appalachian State to 12 wins in his lone season with the Mountaineers. App State also won its bowl game that season with Drinkwitz missing that contest after being hired at Mizzou. In his five seasons as head coach Drinkwitz has never had a losing regular season record and in 2023 vaulted Missouri into the national spotlight.

Roster
The biggest improvement for the Tigers last year was their offense. They went from averaging 24.8 points in 2022 to 32.5 points last year and the guys mainly responsible for the increase return giving hope that another offensive display is in place. The offense blossomed into an efficient unit last year under Brady Cook finishing among the top 30 nationally in total yards and points per game. And Cook returns for his third season as the starter after completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 3,317 yards and 21 touchdowns with only six interceptions in 369 attempts.
What’s scary about the 2024 version of the Tigers is that their passing game can be even better. The top receivers all return and Mizzou might have the best receiver in America on their sideline. Luther Burden III had 86 receptions for 1,212 yards and nine TDs last season. And with opposing defenses trying to lock down the No. 1 option, Theo Wease is a dangerous target. Wease was second on the team with 49 catches for 682 yards and six scores. Tight end Brett Norfleet came on in the second half of the season with three TD grabs and will be a nice outlet.
After being the run game last season, Cody Schrader has moved on leaving a gaping hole in the backfield. Marcus Carroll rushed for 1,350 yards in 2023 to earn first-team All-Sun Belt honors at Georgia State comes in via the transfer portal as does App State’s Nate Noel giving the Tigers what could be a formidable 1-2 punch at running back. And everyone operates behind an offensive line that returns three starters and once again should be a strength.
There were some issues last year defensively like giving up 533 yards and 49 points to LSU and 31 points in a close win over Florida, but for the most part the group was solid. There were some significant losses, but the portal likely filled the void with seven new players to build a strong front seven. Johnny Walker leads a versatile line coming off a 5-sack season that also saw him record 9.5 TFLs and three forced fumbles.
Schedule
Playing in the rugged SEC rarely gives teams a break. However, the Tigers’ slate is about as dreamy as it can get, making the OVER on their college football futures bet a seemingly good wager. Off the board are games against some of the top teams. Mizzou won’t get a chance to avenge last season’s setbacks to LSU and Georgia, and they don’t get newcomer Texas. Also, Ole Miss, Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee are out. The two biggest games on the schedule are on the road against Alabama and Texas AM. And they have Oklahoma and an improved Auburn club at home.
Prediction
We won’t know if the defense has improved until after a few games. Thankfully the non-conference portion of the schedule looks favorable ahead of the Week 6 game at Texas AM. The Tigers should be fighting for a SEC title unless something drastic happens. There is little depth at QB with transfers leaving the program and if anything happens to Cook the season is in danger. Even then I think winning 10 games is a stretch forcing me to back the UNDER.
