At least there was some consistency in the Week 1 NFL same game parlays. The much awaited return of Aaron Rodgers turned out to be a bust with the New York Jets losing their opener on Monday Night Football to the San Francisco 49ers. 32-19. The Jets will likely be a better team than in years past simply by having the three-time MVP behind center, but as it was noted in the Jets at 49ers same game parlay article, they have a lot of moving parts. Backing the reigning NFC champions as a 4.5-point NFL betting line underdog looked like a NFL best bet and it was.
Returning to the field after a year away from the game due to an Achilles injury suffered in last season’s opener, Rodgers looked rusty. It also didn’t help that he faced a Niners defense that was third-best in fewest points allowed in 2023. Rodgers finished the game 13 of 21 for 167 yards with a touchdown and an interception. A 3-yard touchdown from Breece Hall late in the first quarter gave New York a 7-3 lead. It was downhill for the Jets from there.

With two teams that have been traditionally strong defensively a NFL bet backing UNDER 44 looked like a smart play. And it appeared to be a better wager when it was announced before kickoff that Niners’ Christian McCaffrey was scratched. The NFL’s leading rusher a season ago gave way to former undrafted free agent Jordan Mason and the Jets’ D had no answer. Mason rushed for 147 yards and a TD on 28 carries helping the Niners score on eight consecutive possessions.
That scoring spurt not only put the game away it allowed the teams to easily go above the total turning our NFL picks and parlay into a losing ticket. The Niners were methodical amassing over 400 total yards without a committing a turnover. They also possessed the football for nearly 39 minutes never allowing Rodgers and the Jets an opportunity to get back in the game.

Aaron Rodgers will get another chance on Monday Night Football when his New York Jets visit the defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers in the Week 1 edition. In his first game with the Jets Rodgers sustained an Achilles injury on the fourth snap in last year’s MNF opener pretty much ending any hopes of Gang Green stopping the longest current playoff drought in the NFL. Somehow they won seven games, which was actually an accomplishment given the carousel at quarterback, and expectations are increased as long as Rodgers can remain healthy and on the field. Rodgers hasn’t had a lot of success against the Niners during his time in Green Bay and this matchup isn’t ideal for him and his teammates. With that said the 49ers hit the board at BetMGM as a 4.5-point favorite on the NFL betting line.
Reduced juice betting is one of the best ways for any sports bettor to save money and far too many people don’t take advantage of it. If you are not playing at a sportsbook that offers reduced juice betting then you are simply giving away money.
The Week 1 NFL Monday Night Football game between the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers takes place on September 9, 2024 from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA at 8:20 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN and ABC.

The Jets went all in last year acquiring the three-time MVP to get them to the postseason. It was a risky move investing in an aging quarterback and things didn’t work out. Rodgers was done for the season after a brief moment and the Jets were cooked. They cut their losses with former first-round pick Zach Wilson, who was a bust as the second overall pick in 2021. The good news is that Rodgers had basically an entire year off resting a body that now has 40 years on it. And the Jets made every effort to give him resources using their first five picks in the most recent draft on offensive players.
Rodgers returning to his home state to face the team he desperately wanted to play for is just one storyline to this game. And since the teams rarely meet there has to be something to talk about. The return of former Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is another side note. He faces his old squad for the first time since taking over the Jets in 2021 after two highly successful seasons. Saleh’s defense ranked among the top 5 in his last two years as the Niners DC.
Defense hasn’t been the problem with the Jets the last few years. They ranked among the top 5 in the NFL in fewest yards allowed the last two seasons. Failures on offense have been the major culprit for the Jets putting together eight straight losing seasons. Draft busts like Sam Darnold and most recently Wilson haven’t been the answer so a veteran with plenty of experience is the next option. Rodgers is that guy and he can do wonders as long as he remains on the field.
The fortunes of the Jets hinge mainly on Rodgers. The Niners don’t have a single player they rely on rather a committee of playmakers that have them dreaming of another Super Bowl appearance. A lot went right for them last year putting together a 12-5 record and earning the top seed in the NFC playoffs. They remained healthy for the most part and Brock Purdy did what he had to keep the offense running. Purdy completed more than 69 percent of his passes for 4,280 yards and 31 TDs.
An abundance of weapons, however, helped the Niners finish second in total offense and third in scoring. Christian McCaffrey led the league in rushing and the club recently signed leading receiver Brandon Aiyuk and lineman Trent Williams bringing nearly the entire offense back for another run.
From a NFL betting standpoint this game scares me. I can see it going either way with the Jets looking much stronger with Rodgers at the helm. And you can’t discount the Niners, who won at least 10 games in each of the past three seasons while reaching the NFC Championship each time. San Francisco is the proven commodity, though, and playing at home gives them an advantage so I’m backing them minus the points. I also believe the strong defense on both sides keep the score under the NFL betting line total.
