Our first foray into NFL same game parlays on Sunday Night Football didn’t go exactly as planned. Backing the Detroit Lions as a 3.5-point NFL betting line home favorite didn’t look like a good play when the Rams took a 20-17 lead with four and a half minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Throwing down on OVER 51 was also questionable. The teams didn’t rally to score 16 points in the remaining time so that bet was lost. But the Lions overcame the deficit to win in overtime, 26-20.
For a team that was among the best throwing the football last season the Lions changed things up in Week 1. Taking advantage of a trimmed down Rams defense that was playing without former Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald, who retired over the summer, the Lions ran the football effectively. David Montgomery amassed 91 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and Jahmyr Gibbs ran the ball 11 times for 40 yards and a score. Overall, the Lions had 31 rushes for 163 yards.

Former Detroit top draft pick Matthew Stafford did his best to help the teams reach the OVER. Stafford had another big game against his former squad throwing for 317 yards and a TD. He also had a costly interception that thwarted a drive and prevented points from going on the board late in the first half. The man Stafford was traded for didn’t have big numbers, but he was clutch when he needed to be. Jared Goff was 18 of 28 for 217 yards with a TD and a pick. He also engineered a 55-yard drive in under two minutes for the game-tying field goal.
Detroit didn’t let Stafford have a chance in OT taking the opening kickoff and marching right down the field. On the eighth play of the drive Montgomery scored on a 1-yard plunge giving the Lions enough to cover the 4-point spread on the NFL betting line.

A playoff rematch from a season ago kicks off the Sunday Night Football slate and puts an end to the football betting day. The Detroit Lions enjoyed one of the finest seasons in franchise history in 2023 matching the mark for most wins and advancing to the NFC Championship game. They won their first playoff game in over three decades beating the Los Angeles Rams at home, 24-23, in the Wild Card Round. The teams renew acquaintances in Week 1 with the Rams having a different look following the retirement of three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. A blockbuster swap of quarterbacks a few years ago will forever link the teams with Jared Goff looking to do what Matthew Stafford did for LA in his first season with the Rams: win the Super Bowl. Oddsmakers at BetMGM have the Lions as a 3.5-point favorite on the NFL betting line.
Reduced juice betting is one of the best ways for any sports bettor to save money and far too many people don’t take advantage of it. If you are not playing at a sportsbook that offers reduced juice betting then you are simply giving away money.

The difficult chore for the Lions is maintaining their success from last season. Winning 12 games and the NFC Central title was an accomplishment and the team now has its sights set on reaching the Super Bowl for the first time. But the process has been in the making longer which leads me to believe that the Lions are up for the challenge. They didn’t just sneak up on teams last season but built the squad by a successful stretch that closed the 2022 campaign.
You may recall the Lions won eight of their final 10 games in 2022 staying in playoff contention until the final weekend of the regular season. They continued that surge going 12-5 last season and winning two playoff games. And they’ve been a money-maker for backers going 23-7 as a NFL betting pick against the spread in their last 30 games.
A big part of that success has been the development of an offense that was among the best in the NFL last season. With Jared Goff throwing for the second-most yards in the league, the Lions had the third-best total offense averaging nearly 400 yards a game. They also were the fifth-highest scoring team at just over 27 points per outing. Even with Donald on the roster last year the Rams were below average on defense. Take him and Ernest Jones IV, who was traded during training camp, out of the equation and the Rams are a question mark.
That will allow Goff and his playmakers to put up points, and the balanced Detroit attack is enough of a headache for the best defenses in the NFL. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs combined to rush for nearly 2,000 yards and Amon-Ra St. Brown had 119 receptions for 1,515 yards. He and Sam LaPorta each had 10 TD receptions.
The Rams also boast an offense with plenty of firepower. Stafford was reinvigorated last season with the help of rookies Kyren Williams and Puka Nacua. Williams rushed for over 1,100 yards and 12 TDs while Nacua was the top target with Cooper Kupp missing time early in the year. The Rookie of the Year runner-up snared 105 receptions for close to 1,500 yards.
The teams failed to over the NFL betting line total of 53 in their playoff game, but circumstances have changed. The total of 52 is the highest on the Week 1 betting board and its asking a lot for teams that gave its starters very few reps in the preseason to score that many points. However, defense is a big enough issue for the Rams as they navigate the early season without key performers on that side of the ball and the Lions will take advantage. The Rams were a surprise last season but on paper they aren’t as good as the Lions, who added pieces for a deeper playoff run in 2024.
