The Boston Celtics are once again firmly in a “championship-or-bust” mindset, with the pressure to win a championship increased by the large financial stakes. After winning the NBA title in 2023-24 led by Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, the Celtics now want to establish a dynasty. But since the golden age of the Warriors, no team has been able to win back-to-back titles. The Celtics are fully committed as seen by the contract extensions of key players like Jayson Tatrum and Derrick White. Tatum, who led the team in scoring previous season with an average of 26.9 points per game, is still the team’s top player. His efforts to enhance his three-point shooting during the offseason with trainer Drew Hanlen demonstrate his dedication to spearheading Boston’s quest for another championship. Tatum is complemented by Brown’s ability to attack the hoop, while Jrue Holiday—a two-time NBA champion—bolsters the defense with his excellent play and capacity to contain the best players on the other team.
Other NBA Title Contenders
This offseason, one of the Celtics’ Eastern Conference rivals made several significant acquisitions, as the Knicks signed OG Anunoby and acquired Mikal Bridges from the Nets and then made a big splash by getting Karl-Anthony Towns from Minnesota in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and a 2025 first-round pick. Then another rival team in the East, the Philadelphia 76ers, created a stir when they agreed to a four-year max contract with nine-time All-Star Paul George. Tyrese Maxey, the franchise cornerstone, was also signed by the Sixers, signifying that the three players—George, Maxey, and former NBA MVP Joel Embiid, appear to be in it for the long run. The addition of center Isiah Hartenstein by Oklahoma City caused the most movement near the top of NBA odds in the West.
It would be wise to keep an eye on the Knicks. They won 50 games last season and now look to be much better. The team added Towns to a group that includes Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges. Head coach Tom Thibodeau will have his team in contention for the NBA title this season.
The 76ers should be a team that contends this season. After last season’s team finished 47-35 despite Joel Embiid missing 43 regular-season games, there may be merit in betting Philly this season.
The Milwaukee Bucks have the fourth-highest projected victory total in the East and are predicted to win the Central Division. All-Star shooting guard Khris Middleton played just 55 games, and the team fired Adrian Griffin and hired Doc Rivers more than halfway through the season. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard didn’t co-exist that well, but with the addition of Delon Wright, Taurean Prince, and Gary Trent, Jr., Milwaukee may see major improvement.
With the addition of guard Alex Caruso and center Isaiah Hartenstein, the Oklahoma City Thunder are hoping to advance farther with the continued development of young players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren.
If Randle can settle in fast and Edwards keeps up his explosive growth, the Minnesota Timberwolves might be worth a look. Without Towns, they won’t have to make a step backward. DiVincenzo emerges as the squad’s top shooter right away.
With Kentavious Caldwell-Pope leaving to join the Magic, Denver lost a starting guard. However, Dario Saric and Russell Westbrook joined to help anchor the second unit. The hope is that Christian Braun, Julian Strawther, and Peyton Watson can collectively replace Caldwell-Pope, as the frontcourt of Nikola Jokic, Aaron Gordon, and Michael Porter, Jr. stays among the best in the league.
