March 8, 2022THE PLAYERS Championship Matchup Picks
March 9, 2022Shockwaves were heard around the NFL on Tuesday, as the Denver Broncos announced a massive trade with the Seattle Seahawks that will land them quarterback Russell Wilson. Super Bowl odds on the Broncos immediately dropped, with Denver going from 25-1 to 12-1. The Broncos now have the fifth-lowest Super Bowl odds at SugarHouse Sportsbook behind only Buffalo, Kansas City, Green Bay and San Francisco. The Broncos have been looking for an answer at quarterback ever since Peyton Manning retired after Super Bowl 50. Denver paid a steep price to get a quarterback no longer in his prime, as they gave up three players and multiple draft picks.
Broncos Pay Big Price for Wilson
The Broncos did not come out of this trade without suffering a lot of pain, as they gave up quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, two first-round draft picks, two second-round draft picks and a fifth-round pick. The Broncos get Wilson and a fourth-round pick in return. Wilson has a total of 292 career TD passes, second only to Peyton Manning in a quarterback’s first ten years in the NFL. Wilson will have to pass a physical and the trade can’t be officially announced until the new league year begins on March 16.
The Broncos are now the second choice in the betting odds behind Kansas City to win the AFC West next season. SugarHouse has the Chiefs listed at -110, while the Broncos are now the second choice in the betting odds at +225.
Broncos Banking on Wilson
The Broncos are counting heavily on Wilson to lead them to a Super Bowl, as that is the only way you can possibly justify giving away the farm to get him. The Broncos have had the most starting quarterbacks of any NFL team since 2016, starting 11 different players under center. Wilson had a great run in Seattle leading them to one Super Bowl title and he made the Pro Bowl nine times. It should be noted that Wilson is 33-years old and his production in recent years has gone down.
Wilson will be counted on to play at a very high level in Denver. He does have some talent on offense to work with, as the Broncos feature wide receivers Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick. The loss of Fant will hurt Denver, but the Broncos have a lot of offensive weapons including running back Javonte Williams. The Denver defense should more than hold their own next season, as they were third in scoring defense a year ago and they feature cornerback Patrick Surtain II.
More Questions for Seattle
The Seahawks will save $11 million dollars in cap space for 2022, but they are still stuck with $26 million in dead money for the season. They will have to decide what to do with All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner who is looking for a new deal. Head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider will be under pressure to find a quarterback either through the draft or through free agency because the Seahawks are not in full rebuild mode. Seattle’s Super Bowl odds went from 40-1 to 75-1 at many online sportsbooks. The Seahawks official Twitter feed made fun of the trade and that did not go over well with many Seattle fans.
It is interesting to note that the Denver Broncos will play at the Seattle Seahawks next season. Wilson and the Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. Wilson will become the first quarterback to start for a team he beat in the Super Bowl.
