January 8, 2025Hideki Matsuyama will look to win in Hawaii for the second straight week and he is the favorite at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Matsuyama was brilliant last week in winning The Sentry and he is listed at odds of +900 at Caesars to make it two straight. It helps his cause that World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is not playing, but you can’t take anything away from what Matsuyama did last week in Maui, shooting a record 35-under par, the lowest 72-hole PGA Tour score ever. The field this week is larger than last week, as this will be a full-field event, but the field is also weaker, as very few big names are in action. Corey Conners is actually the second choice in the betting odds at +1200. Let’s look at Sony Open in Hawaii odds and picks.

Venue: Waialae Country Club is a par 70 that measures 7,044 yards. The course features tree-lined fairways, small greens and has 83 bunkers.
Last Year: Grayson Murray beat Keegan Bradley and Byeong Hun An in a playoff. Murray made a 40-footer for birdie on the first playoff hole and then it was Bradley missing from 18 feet and An missed from 4 feet. It was Murray’s first win in more than six years but it was not enough to turn his life around, as Murray committed suicide last May at the age of 30.

Favorite
Hideki Matsuyama +900
It was another favorite that bit the dust last week when Xander Schauffele didn’t win. He was never in contention and just added to the list of golf betting favorites who have lost. I say every week that golf betting favorites don’t win often enough to be profitable and that the only player worth considering as a golf betting favorite is Scottie Scheffler. And although Matsuyama was great last week, he is not Scheffler and I am not taking him as the favorite.
Value Picks
Tom Kim +2000
I am really surprised that Kim has odds of 20-1 this week. I think he is the second-best player in the field behind Matsuyama. I know Kim struggled last season but I think 2025 will be a much better year for him. He finished second in South Korea in the DP World Tour Genesis Championship, and he was 2nd at the Hero World Challenge behind Scottie Scheffler. I think there is value in Kim at odds of +2000.
Byeong Hun An +2500
One thing I am going to try to do more often this season is take players who finished second in an event the previous season. Oftentimes we see that a player who does well but falls just short will come back and win the next year. An had every chance to win last season and that missed four-foot putt in the playoff had to hurt. I expect him to contend again this year and we get 25-1.
Austin Eckroat +3000
You have to like how Eckroat is playing. He is now in the Top 40 in the World Rankings and he played well last week with a 15th place finish. It could have been a lot better if he had experience. He will be much more at home on this course where he finished 12th in his debut in 2023.
Cam Davis +5000
Davis played well at The Sentry last week, especially on Friday and Saturday where he kept pace with Matsuyama and Morikawa. He finished tied for fourth overall. Davis does well on short courses and he has played well at Waialae in the past with a 9th place finish in 2020.
Sepp Straka +5500
The Sentry was a good step in the right direction for Straka as he finished 15th. He should be even better this week on Bermudagrass where he thrives. He has a number of good finishes on that surface including a win in 2022. I expect Straka to contend this week and he is a live longshot at 55-1.
Mackenzie Hughes +6000
Hughes is playing well of late with a number of good finishes. He has good numbers on courses like this one and we know he can putt. He has won twice on the PGA Tour and both of those wins came on Bermudagrass greens. I’ll take a flyer on him at big odds.Check out the latest Sony Open in Hawaii odds at Caesars.
