February 11, 2025The PGA Tour closes the curtain on the West Coast Swing with this week’s Genesis Invitational. The event will have a different look, however, with the tournament moved from its longtime home of Riviera Country Club south to Torrey Pines due to the recent wildfires that ravaged the Los Angeles area. The Tour was just at Torrey Pines a few weeks ago with Harris English emerging victorious at the Farmers Insurance Open. The field is much deeper for the season’s third Signature Event with four of the top five in the OWGR headlining. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the outright betting favorite Proline+ with No. 3 ranked Rory McIlroy second on the odds board. They are the only players with shorter than 10/1 odds on the opening PGA betting line.
Venue: No stranger to the PGA Tour, Torrey Pines has hosted the Farmers Insurance Open since 1968 as well as the US Open in 2008 and 2021. Unlike the FIO, which used both courses on the property, only the South Course will be used for the invited field. Renovations over the past several years have transformed the course into one of the longest on Tour at 7,765 yards at par 72. Given the length you would expect big hitters to have an advantage. English won the FIO last month finishing at 8-under and Jon Rahm won the 2021 US Open at 6-under on the South Course.
Last Year: Hideki Matsuyama closed with a 62 making up six-shots in the final round to claim the victory by three swings over a pair of golfers for his ninth Tour win. Matsuyama’s 9-under was the lowest closing round ever by a winner at Riviera CC. He finished at 17-under with his margin the largest since Dustin Johnson won the 2017 edition by five swings. Luke list and Will Zalatoris were co-runners-up with a trio of golfers another shot back tied for fourth.

Favorite
Scottie Scheffler +400
To be as good as Scheffler’s been over the past few years you need to adapt and overcome. He won’t win every week but he wins more often than others, which is why he’s atop the PGA golf odds. The move to Torrey Pines isn’t the best news for Scheffler since his best finish in four starts on the track was T7 at the 2021 US Open. He also has two MCs tossed in. He needs to adapt and few do it better.
Value Picks
Collin Morikawa +1500
His last trip to Torrey Pines was the exception and not the norm giving Morikawa some value on his price. He missed the cut at the 2024 FIO but has gone 19 consecutive starts without a MC since. He opened the season as runner-up at The Sentry for his eighth top 10 in his last 17 starts. Prior to his MC last year, Morikawa tamed Torrey Pines with a T4 at the 2021 US Open and solo third at the 2023 FIO.
Jordan Spieth +4000
I don’t know if he’s back, but Spieth responded to an ugly outing at Pebble Beach by finishing T4 at the WM Phoenix Open, his first top 5 showing since placing third at The Sentry in 2024. He missed some time due to an injury that required surgery so there will likely be a few snafus along the way. He doesn’t have the best history at Torrey Pines though he did place among the top 20 at the 2021 US Open.
Will Zalatoris +4000
His exquisite ball-striking could give Zalatoris an edge this week with Torrey Pines rewarding that facet of the game. A strong history on the course is evidence. Zalatoris lost in a playoff in 2022 after a T7 the previous year. most recently he was T13 at the 2024 FIO overcoming an opening 73.
Harris English +6500
It’s hard to expect English to run it back but you never know. What makes him an intriguing pick is his history at Torrey Pines. In addition to his win last month English was solo third at the 2021 US Open giving him three podium finishes in his career on the track.
