Perhaps the biggest storyline is the potential ascension of Team USA, whose National Team Development Program has become a viable source of top NHL players since they last played best-on-best hockey at the 2016 World Cup. That year, Team USA was a miserable flop. Since then, they have emerged as arguably the most talented team in the sport.
Coach Mike Sullivan has plenty of options for utilizing Auston Matthews, his captain and best player. Matthews is the greatest goal scorer of his generation but has endured some ups and downs in his first season wearing the ‘C’ for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It is expected that Sullivan will use Matthew Tkachuk and JT Miller, perhaps the two most physical point-a-game players in the NHL, to do Matthews’ dirty work in the corners and shovel pucks into the low slot, where No. 34 is the most dangerous scorer on the planet.
Connor Hellebuyck is the best goalie in the world. He will likely win the Vezina Trophy for the third time this season, and if the vote were today, he might win the Hart, too. Hellebuyck’s recent postseason struggles might scare some Americans, but they should only give him added motivation to prove he can perform in the clutch.
Mike Sullivan hasn’t had much success with the Pittsburgh Penguins since winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, but those championships will buy him a ton of clout with a group that’s pretty young by the standards of international hockey.
Team Canada Team Overview
Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby on one team is the ultimate fantasy hockey proposition, and it will become a reality on Saturday night.
And that star power really defines what Canada will or won’t be in this tournament. No team has a higher concentration of Hall of Fame talent at the top of its lineup, but no team has greater question marks in goal, and most prognosticators would agree Canada doesn’t have the best team in the tournament. Calling the Canadians an underdog would be taking it too far, but Canada does not enter the Four Nations as the favorite.
It’s difficult to fathom what Canada’s ceiling is on offense. McDavid, Crosby, and MacKinnon have combined for six Hart Trophies, seven Art Ross Trophies, and three Rocket Richard Trophies. Cale Makar is the most talented defenseman of his generation. No other nation can rival the superstar juice at the top of Canada’s lineup.
Given that Team USA can match or exceed Canada’s overall depth of skater talent and has superior goaltending, Canada’s fate could come down to whether one of Jordan Binnington, Adin Hill, or Sam Montembeault gets hot.
Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper is a two-time Stanley Cup winner and four-time finalist. Among NHL bench bosses with at least 600 games, he trails only Scotty Bowman in career points percentage, at .636. Cooper helmed Canada at the 2017 World Championship, where they finished as the runner-up to Sweden.
