The Kentucky Wildcats needed to do one thing exceptionally well in their contest with the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, February 15. They needed to slow Horn’s leading scorer Tre Johnson to improve their chances of winning. Welp, they failed to do that with Johnson going off for a season-high 32 points and Texas rallied for an 82-78 triumph, ending a three-game losing streak. Our same game college basketball parlay was profitable since we backed the Cats as a 4.5-point road dog on the college basketball betting line at Caesars sportsbook and had the OVER of 158.5.
Kentucky was primed for an upset leading by five with less than four minutes remaining in the second half. But Johnson converted a three-point play igniting a 14-1 Texas scoring spurt that gave the Horns a 78-70 lead with 34 seconds left. Johnson had a season-high 32 points despite going just 1 of 8 on three-point attempts. Tramon Mark also had a big game for Texas hitting 9 of 14 field goals for a season-best 26 points. The duo combined to score 12 of the 14 points during the decisive spree.

As the character Steve McCroskey from the movie Airplane! said in the 1980 comedy, “Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.” It looks like the Texas Longhorns picked the wrong week end a three-game losing streak as they take on the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday. The overall record doesn’t look bad at 15-10, but the Horns are just 4-8 in SEC play and 2-7 against nationally ranked opponents. And UT has lost its last two home games outright to Arkansas as a 7-point favorite on the college basketball betting line at Caesars sportsbook and on Tuesday 103-80 to No. 2 Alabama. Time is running out for the Horns to build a NCAA Tournament-worthy resume, especially since winning the SEC tournament isn’t going to happen.

The Wildcats got through a recent brutal five-game stretch with just one victory seriously impacting their chances of winning the SEC. They were hanging with Auburn and Alabama until then. Two of the losses were to now No. 2 Alabama and now No. 19 Ole Miss, which are excusable. But setbacks to Vanderbilt and Arkansas are not for the proud program. In the middle of that five-game stretch was a win over then No. 8 Tennessee when the Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field and from three-point land.
Coming out of the slide UK manhandled South Carolina, 80-57, which isn’t saying a whole lot since the Gamecocks have yet to win a league game. Still a win is a win and Cats were bolstered by the return of Lamont Butler, who provided a much needed spark on both ends of the floor. Butler hadn’t played since the middle of last month compounding the team’s ball handling issues with Kerr Kriisa also on the shelf.
After giving up an average of 93.5 points in losses to Arkansas and Ole Miss, Butler’s presence was also felt on the defensive end. South Carolina shot just 33 percent and was 4 of 22 from three-point range. UK held Tennessee to 17 percent shooting from deep beating the Vols for the second time in two weeks, 75-64, on Tuesday. You could say the Vols are in a slump offensively scoring more than 80 points just once in their last six games. That’s kind of a big deal when you average 86.3 points and are 18th best in the country in three-point accuracy.
Nobody said it was going to be easy and it definitely isn’t with the SEC a premiere college basketball conference. After a 23-point home loss to Alabama on Tuesday switching conferences doesn’t look like such a good move. I guess all’s well when the checks get delivered. This is a good learning experience for the program seeing what needs to be done to improve.
The Horns aren’t too far off but they aren’t reaching the top of the SEC standings until they can win games against elite competition. Seven of their 10 losses are against teams that were nationally ranked at the time of the game. Houston Christian, Chicago State and Delaware State aren’t quite the same as Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky.
If he sticks around the team has a nice building block in freshman Tre Johnson, who leads the SEC averaging 19.3 points. He also averages the most minutes of any UT player. Johnson will be a handful but the Horns could be impacted by the loss of leading rebounder and second leading scorer Arthur Kaluma, who exited the Alabama with a knee issue. He played just 11 minutes and was scoreless before leaving. It would behoove Texas to try and slow the pace in this game. The Horns tried to run with Alabama and were no match. Kentucky might not be as potent but they certainly play at a high level.
