The Dodgers travel to the bay this week as they get set for a divisional series against rival San Francisco. Los Angeles comes in as the National League’s best team at 68-33. They’ve won four of their last five games and will look to keep the momentum rolling.
The Giants enter the matchup hoping to build upon a series win over Chicago. Prior to the weekend, the Giants had lost seven straight games, but taking three of four matchups from the Cubs got them back to .500 on the season.
San Francisco has been one of the better offensive teams to date, having totaled the eighth-most runs in the majors. They’ve been able to get the ball out of the ballpark (118 HRs), which has helped make up for a batting average that sits on the lower end (.235).
On the mound, the Giants boast a respectable 3.85 team ERA. While that mark does rank as the 10th best in the majors, San Francisco sits in the bottom half of the MLB in both opponent batting and strikeouts. Where the team has struggled most is on the back end. The bullpen has the fifth worst ERA in baseball.
Los Angeles, on the other hand, leads the majors in team ERA while ranking second in the NL in bullpen ERA. They’ve been dominant on the bump, boasting top 10 MLB ranks in opponent hitting, strikeouts, home runs allowed, saves, and quality starts. It’s baseball’s best staff from top to bottom.
And luckily for that staff, they get plenty of run support. The Dodgers have the third-best batting average in the majors while leading the National League in runs scored. They can hit for power (130 HRs) or average, seemingly having no weak links in the order.

Probable Pitchers
San Francisco Giants – LHP Alex Wood
Wood, a former Dodger, is scheduled to take the mound Tuesday night for the Giants. The lefty has recorded a 7-8 overall record with a 4.11 ERA on the season. While his numbers won’t wow you, he pitched much better in the month of July.
In five starts, Wood allowed just five earned runs over 27.1 innings, good for a 1.65 ERA. He also struck out 28 hitters and posted a 2-1 record. The only loss in that time was, however, to the Dodgers. His last time facing LA, he allowed a pair of runs over four innings of work in a 4-2 defeat.
Wood is 0-2 when facing the Dodgers this year, allowing five runs in 9.1 frames. He has struck out 13 batters in those appearances, but he’ll need to work on keeping the ball in the park this time around.
Los Angeles Dodgers – RHP Tyler Anderson
Anderson has been stellar this season, posting an 11-1 record and 2.61 ERA. The Dodgers won all five of his starts in July, and the righty hasn’t surrendered an earned run over his last 19 innings of work. That includes a matchup against the Giants where he threw six scoreless frames to help his team land a 5-1 win.
Anderson has been about the same at home and on the road. Away from Dodger Stadium, he’s posted a 2.63 ERA and a 5-1 record. He’ll look to keep that dominance up in this Tuesday night matchup.
MLB Prediction
Despite playing on the road, you have to back the Dodgers in this matchup. The pitching matchup alone should lead you to that conclusion. Wood has yet to beat the Dodgers this season, and while his performance of late has been encouraging, Los Angeles seems to have his number (4.96 ERA).
Anderson, on the other hand, has been near unhittable over his last three starts. The Giants might be able to end that 19-inning scoreless streak that Anderson is currently on, but we don’t expect them to score enough runs to land the win.
