August 17, 2022A heavyweight rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua is set for Saturday in Saudi Arabia. Usyk is the current WBO, WBA, and IBF heavyweight title holder, while Joshua is ranked as the No. 4 contender.
These two fought last September, and it was Usyk winning by unanimous decision. Usyk is unbeaten in his career at 19-0 with 13 knockouts, while Joshua is 24-2 with 22 knockouts. The fight will take place at the Jeddah Superdome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Usyk vs. Joshua
Usyk has fought only 19 times as a professional and considering he is 35 years old, that is a bit strange, but he is unbeaten. He is coming off the win against Joshua last September to win the heavyweight title. His previous four fights before the win over Joshua were a unanimous decision win against Derek Chisora in October of 2020, a 7th round RTD against Chazz Witherspoon in October of 2019, an 8th round knockout against Tony Bellew in November of 2018, and a unanimous decision win against Mura Gassiev in July of 2018.
Joshua is 32 years old and has a record of 24-2 with 22 knockouts. He was unbeaten in his career until losing to Andy Ruiz Jr. in June of 2019. He bounced back to beat Ruiz in December of 2019 by unanimous decision and won by 9th round knockout against Kubrat Pulev in December of 2020 but then lost to Usyk last September.
Boxing Odds at BetRivers
Oleksandr Usyk -205
Anthony Joshua +150
Oleksandr Usyk is listed as a -205 favorite to win this fight. That means you would bet $205 to win $100 on Usky or the 2.05-1 equivalent. Joshua is listed as the underdog at a price of +150, and that would mean for every $100 bet, you will win $150 if Joshua gets the victory.
The fight is scheduled for 12 rounds. The total rounds betting line is listed at 10.5 rounds with the over at -162. That means that if you think the fight is going to go to at least 10.5 rounds (over), for you to win your bet, you would need to bet $162 to win $100. The under 10.5 rounds would mean you would need to risk $100 to win $121 on the fight to go under 10.5 rounds.
BetRivers also has a number of other props for this fight, including how the fight will end and in what round. Usyk to win by KO, TKO, or DQ is listed at +220, while he is listed at +140 to win by decision. Joshua is +280 to win by KO, TKO or DQ, while he is listed at +650 to win by decision. A draw is listed at +1600.
Usyk vs. Joshua Picks
It is interesting to note that Joshua admitted he had the wrong plan for the first meeting against Usyk. “It sounds crazy, but I’m not going to lie – my objective was never to hurt him,” Joshua said to the media, “My aim was to go the full 12 and prove I could box as well as he does. But I didn’t work hard enough to prepare for a 12-round fight at that pace.”
The strategy by Joshua was idiotic, as Usyk dominated the fight, outboxing Joshua at every turn. Joshua was not able to use his power to hurt Usyk, and it was obvious that Joshua wasn’t prepared to fight a southpaw. “I need adjustments to deal with a southpaw because to me, these lefties are a nightmare,” Joshua said to the media, “I swear if Oleksandr wasn’t a lefty, I would have smoked him, 100%.”
Since we know that Joshua had a poor strategy last time, it is hard to see him making the same mistake again. There may be some value on Joshua at the plus price, and if you think Joshua can get the knockout, the plus price of +280 on him winning by knockout is definitely worth considering. Regardless, Joshua should be looking to go all out for a knockout, and that should open things up for both fighters, and there is a good chance the fight ends early one way or another. I’ll go under the 10.5 rounds at plus money.
