October 5, 2022The PGA Tour heads to Las Vegas this week for the Shriners Children’s Open with World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay headlining the field. He is joined by defending champion Sungjae Im and Cantlay’s Presidents Cup teammate Max Homa. A total of 12 players ranked in the top 50 in the world are in the field this week. A number of players from the International team at the Presidents Cup are in the field, as joining Im are Joohyung Kim, Cam Davis, Si Woo Kim, K.H. Lee, Mito Pereira, Taylor Pendrith and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
Let’s look at Shriners Children’s Open matchup picks.
Defending Champion: Sungjae Im
Tournament Notes: This event is held at TPC Summerlin which is a par 71 that measures 7,255 yards. Last year it was all about greens in regulation, as Sungjae Im led the field in GIR and he led the field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green.

Golf Picks
Taylor Montgomery -125 vs. J.T. Poston
The only rookie to finish in the top 10 in the first two events of 2022-23 is Montgomery. He has been on a major roll of late and now he gets to play in Vegas where he was born and currently resides. I was really disappointed in Poston last week and I don’t know that he turns it around in one week. I will take Montgomery in this matchup.
Thomas Detry +104 vs. Lucas Herbert
You have to like the way that Detry is playing right now, as he has seven top 15 finishes, including three straight. He tied for 12th at Fortinet and he tied for 9th last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. I am a little surprised he is listed as the dog in this matchup against Herbert. I will take the plus price on Detry.
Brian Harman -128 vs. Adam Hadwin
We know that Harman usually plays well in Vegas, as he had three straight top 20 finishes from 2016 through 2020. He is coming off a solid season this year and there is no reason he can’t pick up where he left off. I’ll lay the small price and take Harman in this matchup.
Matthew NeSmith +100 vs. Mark Hubbard
There is no question that NeSmith likes to play at TPC Summerlin, as he has finished T18-T8-T14 with a scoring average of 67. Hubbard is coming off a good season but I can’t ignore what NeSmith has done in this event and we get him at a very favorable price in this matchup.
Martin Laird -115 vs. Ryan Palmer
I am relying on course history a lot this week and you have to like what Laird has done in Vegas, as he won this event in 2009 and in 2020. I have seen nothing to like about Palmer’s play for quite some time and there is no reason to think that changes this week. I’ll take Laird in this matchup.
