October 20, 2022The PGA Tour heads to South Carolina this week for the CJ CUP in South Carolina where a strong field is assembled. Six of the world’s top 10 golfers are expected to play including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Rory McIlroy. Jon Rahm, who is coming off a win in the Spanish Open, is in the field along with Justin Thomas, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Collin Morikawa. There are a total of 78 players in the field with spots open to the Top 60 players in the FedExCup standings and 18 exemptions. Players will be competing for a prize purse of over $10 million dollars. It should be an exciting week of golf in South Carolina. I am coming off a 2-3 week with the matchups at the ZOZO Championship. Let’s look at CJ CUP in South Carolina matchup picks.
Defending Champion: Rory McIlroy
Tournament Notes: This event takes place at the Congaree Golf Club which is a par 71 that measures 7,655 yards. The fairways are generous so players can pretty much just bomb at will. The weather this week is expected to be excellent with temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s with no rain. It is worth noting that this is a limited field and there will be no cut.

Golf Picks
McIlroy, Rory -220 vs. Tom Kim
Rory is playing about as well as anyone, as he went over to the DP World Tour after winning the FedExCup and finished tied for 2nd, 4th and tie for 4th. He is now within striking distance of the World No. 1 Golf Ranking. Kim did better than I thought last week, but I can’t see him doing well on this course where length is needed. I’ll take McIlroy in this matchup.
Morikawa, Collin -125 vs. Horschel, Billy
If Horschel can do well this week on a course that is made for long hitters then so be it, but I can’t see it. We know that Morikawa can handle the length and he is definitely the better golfer. I’ll take Morikawa in this matchup.
Scheffler, Scottie -136 vs. Sungjae Im
If Scheffler is to hold on to the top world ranking then he needs to have a good week. I was disappointed in the play of Im last week and I don’t know that it turns around in one week. I’ll take Scheffler here.
Wise, Aaron -143 vs. Bezuidenhout, Christiaan
I know that Bezuidenhout is a good putter, but this week length is needed and he really doesn’t have it. Wise can do well on a course like this one and the price in this matchup is reasonable. I’ll take Wise in this matchup.
Grillo, Emiliano -125 vs. Steele, Brendan
Grillo has four top-five finishes in his last nine starts. He is starting to putt better and he is now comfortable on the PGA Tour. This is a good spot for him this week to get a solid finish. I’ll take Grillo here.
Conners, Corey -143 vs. McCarthy, Denny
This matchup is a bit like one of the ones above in that McCarthy is a good putter who really doesn’t have much distance. I can’t see him being able to do well on this course. Conners seems to thrive no matter the course and the price on this matchup is fair. I’ll take Conners in this matchup.
