ACC Tournament Futures Odds – Two to Buy, One to Sell at BetRivers

The Miami Hurricanes just cashed in as 14-1 underdogs to win the ACC regular season title by fending off the PITT Panthers on Saturday night. Jim Larranaga’s troops will invade the Greensboro Coliseum the top overall seed because of it with 3-1 odds to cut down the nets on March 11. Even so, it’s Tony Bennett’s Virginia Cavaliers that hit the board as the initial favorites to win this tournament (+275) at BetRivers Sportsbook. But with nine of the 15 teams logging double-digit win tallies in what I consider a down conference, I think this year’s tourney is wide open and believe there to be tremendous value backing some of the underdogs further in the pack. Here’s two to buy and one to fade when attacking the 2023 ACC Tournament odds.

BUY: PITT Panthers +800

There were three teams that posted winning records away from their home court this season. The first two should come with little surprise after Miami and Virginia posted winning marks. Can you name the third? Since this is a blurb about the PITT Panthers, you guessed it – it’s the PITT Panthers. Jeff Capel’s troops went 7-5 SU and a moneymaking 10-2 against the closing college basketball odds in those contests. This is an experienced group with four of five starters being seniors led by none other than the straw that stirs the drink in Blake Hinson. The junior guard nearly willed his squad to the win over the Canes in the Watsco Center on Saturday night, and he’ll no doubt be tough for any team that gets in front of him to contend with.

The bracket will find PITT taking on the winner of the FSU/GTECH game in the second round. Move on in a game they’ll be decided favorites and it’s onto the showdown with the No. 4 seed Dookies. Should it oust their head coach’s alma mater, it’ll either be Miami, Syracuse, or Wake Forest in the semis. They split with FSU, swept the Yellow Jackets and dropped the lone encounter with the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor. They also split with Miami, swept the Orange, and won the lone matchup with the Demon Deacons. Currently ranked No. 65 by KenPom and sixth in the ACC, I think this team will play with a chip on its shoulder looking for something to prove.

BUY: Clemson Tigers +900

If not Pittsburgh, then Brad Brownell’s Clemson Tigers are my underdog choice that will have a legit shot to cut down the nets in this tourney. Unlike the Panthers, the Tigers currently find themselves on the outside looking into the Field of 68. Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology currently finds Hunter Tyson and Co. on the “Next Four Out” line along with Oklahoma State, Charleston, and Oregon. A deep run will be needed at minimum for the selection committee to give Clemson the time of day. Win it, and they’ll have no choice!

Though the team ultimately pissed away a shot of winning the ACC regular season title for only the second time in program history after rattling off seven straight conference wins, there’s a fight in this squad that hasn’t gone unnoticed by me. By dismantling Notre Dame in the season finale, Clemson got the benefit of securing the double bye which will find it matching wits against either VTECH, Notre Dame, or NC State in the quarterfinals. Should it advance, it’ll likely set up revenge bouts with either UNC or Virginia whom it dropped 91-71 and 64-57 decisions to in the regular season. If they manage to represent the bottom of the bracket in the finals, we’ll be free rolling should they lock horns with PITT for a shot at lacing up their dancing shoes.

SELL: Duke Blue Devils +400

The Duke Blue Devils without a doubt enter this tournament the hottest team in the ACC. By going into Chapel Hill and defeating the Tar Heels in the regular season finale, John Scheyer’s troops invade Greensboro winners of six straight (3-3 ATS). That being said, none of the teams faced were the cream of the conference crop, and the final two wins against UNC and NC State came by an average of just 4.5 points per game. Neither of those squads are on par with the best of the best in this conference, and that tells me the Dookies are 4-1 pups due to namesake alone. While Kyle Filipowski looks to be coming into his own, the Blue Devils will need much more than him to get out of what I deem the tougher of the two tournament brackets.
