Canelo Alvarez is a huge betting favorite in his super middleweight bout with Caleb Plant that’s scheduled to take place on November 6 in Las Vegas. Pound for pound Alvarez is one of if not the best boxer in the world and can solidify his legacy with another victory. The winner of this fight will be the undisputed super middleweight champion owning the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF titles. With an undefeated record Plant is no pushover, but he is an underdog for the first time since winning the IBF title nearly three years ago.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant Fight Preview
In the convoluted world of professional boxing we don’t often see a title fight unifying a weight class. That’s what makes this matchup all the more special. Not only do we get to see the best fighter of his generation in action, we also have all four belts up for grabs. Alvarez is the heavy favorite to retain his WBA, WBC and WBO straps while taking the IBF belt away from challenger Plant. Don’t think Plant will give away his belt without a fight, though. Yes, the pun was intended.
It’s easy to see why Alvarez is the prohibitive favorite to unify all four titles in the 168 pound class. He’s lost only one fight in his entire career and even that was considered controversial at the time with the judge’s scores disputed in the decision to Floyd Mayweather. While the men will square off in the ring for the first time, it’s not the first time they’ve come to blows. A heated exchange at the fight announcement simply got the boxing world prepared for what comes on Nov. 6.
Alvarez won his previous seven fights since a split decision draw with Gennady Golovkin in September 2017, and he’s fighting for the third time this year. Back in May he handed Billy Joe Saunders his first loss when the bout was stopped after eight rounds. Alvarez was clearly in control putting Saunders on the ropes with a vicious uppercut that shattered his orbital bone.
Just two year earlier Alvarez claimed the WBO light heavyweight title with KO of Sergey Kovalev giving him a world championship in four weight classes. There seemingly isn’t much left for the man to do in the sport yet he continues to fight at a high level.
One thing Plant has going for him is a size advantage. At 6-1 Plant has a roughly four inch advantage and his reach will allow him to counter and, for his sake, avoid the devastating body blows that Alvarez dishes out. Plant is known to have a great jab and his boxing technique is text book. Though he has 12 career KO’s he’s not known for his heavy striking. He can also take a blow but would rather fight in space created by his reach advantage.
If Plant plays to his strengths and is able to frustrate Alvarez with his defensive skills, he could find an opening to land some shots that will take a toll over the course of fight. The bottom, though, is that Alvarez is a more polished fighter with a high boxing IQ and anything that Plant tries will be sniffed out and mitigated by Alvarez.
Bet Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant
With such lofty odds there isn’t much value on wagering Alvarez for the win. It makes more sense to look at other markets to find a better chance to make a few bucks. Or maybe hedge your bets by dropping a few shekels on Plant for the outright. Both fighters have had time to prepare and on even footing Alvarez is the better fighter, that’s why his price is as high as it is. The longer the fight goes the better odds Plant has of becoming the undisputed champ. Even if that’s the case a lot would have to go right. Alvarez exploits openings in his opponents with excellent counterpunching and his body blows are damaging. While it’s tempting to think of an upset, it’s not going to happen. Canelo will win the fight and to maximize my bets I’ll wager on a KO in the eighth round, since that about as long as Plant can last.
