May 2, 2023World No. 3 Rory McIlroy headlines the field for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy will be returning to action for the first time since missing the cut at the Masters. McIlroy has won the Wells Fargo Championship three times, including two years ago when it was held at Quail Hollow. McIlory is listed as the betting favorite at odds of +800 at BetRivers. This week’s tournament is a designated event so that means a $20 million dollar prize pool and a very strong field. Patrick Cantlay is listed as the second choice in the golf betting odds at +1200 and he is followed by Xander Schauffele and last week’s winner Tony Finau at odds of +1400. Let’s look at Wells Fargo Championship picks.
Venue: Quail Hollow Club is a par 71 that measures 7,538 yards. The course hosted the Presidents Cup last year so it did not host the Wells Fargo Championship. When it hosted the Wells Fargo Championship two years ago it was ranked as the fifth-toughest course on the PGA Tour.
Last Year: Max Homa got his fourth PGA Tour win last year in this event. He finished two shots ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick, Keegan Bradley and Cameron Young. Rory McIlroy finished in fifth.

McIlroy, Rory +800
The golf betting favorite lost again last week, when Jon Rahm couldn’t get past Tony Finau in Mexico. McIlroy has had a ton of success in this event, winning it three times, so it makes sense he is favored, but this is a very strong field and we know that golf betting favorites simply don’t win very often. I have to pass on taking McIlroy simply because the favorite rarely wins and this field is very good.
Value Picks
Schauffele, Xander +1400
It could be time for Schauffele to get back into the winner’s circle. He won three times on the PGA Tour last season, but he doesn’t have a win yet this year. He comes in playing well, as he is fourth in total strokes gained in his last twelve rounds. He is fourth in Shots Gained: Approach on the PGA Tour. I think Xander can contend this week and we get decent odds.
Hovland, Viktor +2000
Another player who could have a breakthrough this week is Hovland. He has played well in the past on tough courses and he is definitely rounding into form. Keep in mind that two years ago on this course we saw Hovland shot 68-67 in the first two rounds and ended up finishing two shots behind McIlroy. I’ll take a shot with Hovland this week.
Max Homa +2200
Homa won on the PGA Tour for the first time in 2019 at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. He has shown time and time again that he plays well in big events. He won the Farmers in January and has three other top-15 finishes. He ranks highly in a number of statistics and I expect him to be in the mix this week.
Young, Cameron +2200
I fully expect Young to get his first PGA Tour win soon and it might be this week. He played well at the Dell Technologies Match Play event and we know that he has the game to do well on difficult courses. He finished 2nd at Riviera, 3rd at Southern Hills and 2nd at St Andrews. I give him a chance to win this week.
Woodland, Gary +6600
I know that Woodland didn’t do well last week in Mexico, but this course should suit him better. He has shown in the past that he prefers to play tough courses where scoring is difficult. Woodland ranks well in his last six events in a number of categories and I expect him to play well this week.
