Charles Schwab Challenge Matchup Picks

The PGA Tour heads to Texas this week for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Scottie Scheffler, who has risen to No. 1 in the latest World Golf Rankings after his second-place finish in last week’s PGA Championship, is listed as the betting favorite at BetRivers. Despite this week’s event taking place the week following a major and not having a the designated status and the huge prize purse, the field is actually pretty good with a number of top ranked players in the field. I went 2-2-1 last week with the matchups at the PGA Championship. Let’s look at Charles Schwab Challenge matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Sam Burns

Tournament Notes: Experience is critical at Colonial, as no first-time player at Colonial has won the event since Sergio Garcia in 2001. The grass from tee to green is Bermuda but the greens are bentgrass. The scoring should be better than last year, as the weather looks favorable.

Hovland, Viktor -110 vs. Spieth, Jordan

Hovland continues to play well and he has also finished in the Top 25 in both of his previous trips to Fort Worth. Spieth played okay last week with his wrist injury, but I don’t know that I want to back him until he has had some time off to fully heal. I know that Spieth has played well at Colonial in the past, but I am just not sold he is fully healed. I’ll take Hovland in this matchup.

Kirk, Chris -120 vs. Si Woo Kim

I took a shot with Kirk in the picks article and I’ll back him in this matchup as well. I expect Kirk to play well and I have gone against Kim quite a few times in previous matchups. We usually know by Friday afternoon how Kim is going to do, as he is usually in contention or completely out of it. I’ll take Kirk in this golf betting matchup.

Grillo, Emiliano -110 vs. Rodgers, Patrick

Grillo has played well at Colonial in the past with four top 25 finishes. He didn’t make the cut last week at the PGA but he has been playing well with a tie for 7^th, a tie for 5^th and a tie for 23^rd. I’ll take Grillo in this matchup at the short price

Kitayama, Kurt -120 vs. Min Woo Lee

Kitayama played really well last week, as he tied for 4^th. He actually led the field in par-5 scoring. He played for the first time at Colonial last year and did make the cut. I expect him to play well this week and I’ll take him in this matchup against Lee.

Davis, Cameron +107 vs. McCarthy, Denny

Davis continues to move up the World Golf Rankings, as he is now 49^th. He played well last week with a tie for 4^th. He played well in this event a year ago, as he tied for 7^th. I am definitely surprised at the price of this matchup, as I think Davis should be favored. I’ll take him at plus money.
