May 25, 2023Wash, rinse, repeat; that’s been the “MO” of the Buffalo Bills over the last three seasons with Sean McDermott’s troops taking home AFC East bragging rights. They did so in 2022-23 as the heavy -225 preseason chalk favorites by way of winning 13 regular season games. No other division rival scored a double-digit win tally, so it comes with little surprise to see BetRivers Sportsbook once again installing Josh Allen and co. the favorites heading into the 2023-23 NFL betting season. But unlike last year, the rates of return offered up by their division mates are much lower. Could the Bills three-year reign be coming to an end? Let’s take an offseason deep dive into the current futures odds and see how they stack up.

The Bills got their collective salad tossed at home in the Division Round last we saw them after dropping a 27-10 decision to Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. Regardless, linemakers at BetRivers still deem the reigning division champs the team to beat initially opening them +135 choices to take home the title a fourth straight time. With upper management shoring up the offensive line both via free agency and the NFL Draft, Buffalo looks like it will once again sport one of the best offenses in the NFL. That first round pick of Utah TE Dalton Kincaid was a beaut! So long as your name isn’t Dawson Knox 😉
The only thing holding this team back is a defense that has proven time and time again that it can’t stay healthy. The Bills will however remain the team to beat if Tre’Davious White is able to return to pre-injury form and both Matt Milano and Von Miller are healthy a majority of the year; especially come the second season! NFL futures odds bettors believe that to be the case as well after buying the offering down to +125.

The New York Jets brought up the rear of the AFC East standings after winning a total of seven games. Robert Saleh’s troops did a heck of a job on the defensive side of the ball ranking out amongst the league’s elite in allowing just over 311 yards per game; only the Commanders, Eagles, and 49ers allowed fewer yards. That didn’t stop the front office from nabbing Iowa State EDGE rusher Will McDonald IV in the first round to help improve a pass rush that logged the fifth most sacks in the league.
What held the team back however was limited resources under center. That forced the hand of GM Joe Douglas to make the move to bring veteran Aaron Rodgers into New York with the belief he’ll be the missing ingredient that pushes the team over the top. An offensive line that conceded 42 sacks and opened holes for fewer than 100.0 rushing yards per game was also shored up. Should Rodgers drink from the Fountain of Youth, he could be in line for a huge season with young up-and-comers Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall by his side!

The Miami Dolphins were one of the more entertaining teams a season ago under first-year head coach Mike McDaniel. With Tua Tagovailoa healthy and under center, Miami’s offense was nearly unstoppable with it ripping the opposition through the air for over 265.0 yards per game (No. 4). Much of that had to do with the dynamic 1-2 punch of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle who combined for over 3,000 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. Unfortunately, all three players suffered a myriad of injuries over the course of the regular season which prevented it from competing with Buffalo for division bragging rights.
Miami did however go 1-2 SU and a perfect 3-0 versus the NFL odds against the Bills with the two defeats coming by an average of 3.0 points per game. The Fins have certainly closed the gap on the reigning champs, but is the roster deep enough to compete for the title over the course of a 17-game schedule? The trade to bring Jalen Ramsey into South Beach should drastically help a pass defense that was riddled with injuries. But will that be enough to get over the hump? Ultimately; the success or lack thereof will ultimately depend upon the roster’s overall health.

As dominant the New England Patriots have been throughout a majority of my sports betting career, it still remains an eye-opener to see The Hoodie’s squad once again bringing up the rear of the AFC East futures odds. Last year’s squad flirted with a .500 record after entering the year with an 8.5-game season win total and +475 odds to win the division. Oddsmaker’s expect this year’s team to be worse with it currently offering up an 8-1 return on investment after initially hitting the board +750. Its win total is also a full game lower for those keeping score.
Though the offense stunk out loud last season (No. 26), did it really come as a surprise to see the front office load up on defense in the NFL Draft? Even so, first and second round picks Christian Gonzalez (+1200) and Keion White (+3000) currently has odds on the board at BetRivers to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award – Jus’ Sayn’. Whether it translates into New England winning a double-digit amount of games is to be determined with it something the franchise has only done once (10) since TB12 bolted for Tampa Bay.
