We went 1-2 with last Monday’s MLB Same Game Parlays at BetRivers Sportsbook to kick off the week in the red. Though Texas and Detroit played to a no sweat under, the Tigers had no teeth getting shutout even though Nathan Eovaldi only went five innings. Michael Kopech’s rough first inning prevented us from cashing any of the three suggested positions against the Halos, but Marcus Stroman spun a gem as expected tossing a complete game shutout at the Rays to bring at least one SGP on home. Detroit Tigers vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Aaron Nola isn’t missing bats this season (No. 107 whiff rate) and his velocity is down (No. 153). Even so, he’s by no means as blah as his 4-4 record and 4.70 ERA backed by a 4.40 FIP suggests. The righty had it rough in his last two turns running up against the division leading Braves and streaking Mets, but I expect the vet to settle in coming back home to throw at a Tigers offense that owns a .654 OPS (No. 28) and only averages 3.8 runs per game (No. 26) against RHP.

Alex Faedo doesn’t do much to get the needle moving save for limiting walks in issuing 0.7 per nine innings and racking up strikeouts (9.0/9). His arsenal stands to get brutalized by a Phillies offense that rakes the 4-seamer and bludgeons the slider with multiple Philly bats possessing enormous positive run values against both pitch types. Nick Castellanos reaching the cheap seats in this contest is an investment you should throw some beer money at! Either way, look for Philly to hang a crooked number and for Nola to beast in the series opener.

SAME GAME MLB PARLAY: PHILLIES OVER TEAM TOTAL + NOLA OVER PITCHING OUTS

Houston Astros vs. Toronto Blue Jays

I’m thinking some fireworks are set to go off in the opener between the Astros and Blue Jays with Brandon Bielak set to square off against the struggling Alek Manoah. Though Houston’s right-hander enters his sixth start 2-2 with a 3.19 ERA, I think the negative regression monster has him in his sights with his FIP clocking in at 5.16 while serving up 9.6 hits and 3.5 walks per nine innings. Toronto smashes his secondary pitches in the changeup and sinker which doesn’t bode well if they get to his 4-seamer as well.

What a catastrophe the 2023 MLB betting season has been for Manoah with the right-hander 1-6 and the owner of a 5.46 ERA coming off such a strong showing a short season ago. Yet to see the sixth inning in over a month, he’s all of a sudden allergic to missing bats (No. 156) and is averaging just 1.17 strikeouts per walk. The Astros rank in the bottom third of the league inn walk rate, so this will get real ugly for him if in fact he plays anywhere close to his 6.4 BB/9 rate as dominant Houston’s been against his two favorite pitch types in the sinker/slider.

Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres

The Cubs and Padres are one of four teams with weird wraparound series that conclude Monday night. The finale pits Kyle Hendricks against Blake Snell in what would’ve had many an MLB bettor sprinting to the betting window to hit the under if it were 2018. I’m not so sure that will be the case this time around with the former not looking so hot in his two starts since recuperating from injury and the latter catching all kinds of grief in recent seasons.

That being said, I expect both hurlers to show out early on Monday night which has me buying into it being a competitive low scorer early on before the bullpens are called upon. Here’s to hoping an ump with an enormous K zone nestles in behind home plate which allows for both pitchers to paint the corners low and rack up quick easy outs.
