June 26, 2023Golf Betting – The Match VIII: Mahomes/Kelce vs. Curry/Thompson
June 27, 2023DraftKings Sportsbook will be opening its location at Wrigley Field on Thursday, as a sports bar only, for now, as a first step toward launching its sportsbook in one of the most storied ballparks in the country. DraftKings has a physical sportsbook at the Casino Queen in East St. Louis and is authorized to accept digital bets as a result of this agreement, but it needs a separate permit to operate at Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs.
Customers can view the 2,000 square foot TV screen, which can display up to 25 games at once, when the Wrigley Field facility, which is close to the field, opens on June 27 with food and beverage service. According to a DraftKings press release, the two-story facility has “no terrible seat in the house.” The arena offers theater-style seating on two floors in addition to various seating arrangements, however there is no direct access from the venue to Wrigley Field. Levy, the Cubs’ food and beverage partner, will offer food service. Guests will have to be 21 or older to enter the facility and at least for now, they will not be able to place an in-person wager until the license is approved. DraftKings Sportsbook Wrigley Field will have to rely on simply being a sports bar for the time being, but all of the things needed to accept wagers are already in place for when the facility gets its license.
According to Jeff Denlea, vice president of hospitality strategy for Levy at Wrigley Field, “We’re delighted for this new location to capture the energy and excitement of a visit to the ballpark, with a food-and-beverage experience all its own, created around the way fans enjoy the action together.”
When DraftKings does launch its sportsbook at Wrigley Park, it will be the fourth to be situated at a baseball stadium in the United States. While Caesars Sportsbook runs a location at Chase Field in Phoenix, BetMGM now operates sportsbooks at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati and Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Six states in the United States presently permit sportsbooks at venues for professional sports, including Illinois.
FanDuel inaugurated its sports bar at United Center last fall, and six additional professional sports facilities throughout Illinois are also eligible for licenses. However, that establishment as well does not currently provide betting. FanDuel submitted its application in August of last year, according to the Illinois Gaming Board website.
Sportsbook licenses are also available for Allstate Arena (AHL Chicago Wolves/AHL), Guaranteed Rate Field (MLB Chicago White Sox), SeatGeek Stadium (NWSL Red Stars), Soldier Field (NFL Chicago Bears and MLS Chicago Fire), and Wintrust Arena (WNBA Sky).
