June 28, 2023The PGA Tour heads to Detroit this week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic where defending champion Tony Finau is favored at BetRivers. There are not as many top players this week as we have been seeing recently, since this is not a designated event with the big prize purse, but there are still some big names. Joining Finau is Rickie Fowler who is sponsored by Rocket Mortgage, Max Homa, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa, among others. I went 2-3 with the matchups last week at the Travelers Championship, as Homa let me down. Let’s look at Rocket Mortgage Classic matchup picks.
Defending Champion: Tony Finau
Tournament Notes: Detroit Golf Club is a par 72 that measures up to 7,370 yards. Last year the field averaged 70.397 when the tournament took place in late July. Finau led the field last year in greens-in-regulation when he won this event. Scoring has been good in this event, as Finau set a record last year, shooting 26-under par. Cameron Davis shot -18 two years ago, Bryson DeChambeau shot 23-under par in 2020 and Nate Lashley shot 25-under par in 2019.

Golf Picks
Fowler, Rickie -110 vs. Finau, Tony
There is no question that Fowler is playing as well as he has in years and he just might break his four-year victory drought this week. Finau is the defending champion but he hasn’t played that great recently with just one top 20 finish in his last eight starts. I’ll take Fowler in this matchup.
Thomas, Justin -134 vs. Bradley, Keegan
I am going back to the well again this week and going against the previous week’s winner. It should have worked last week but Homa just completely laid an egg in the opening round and missed the cut. This week we go against Bradley who is in for a huge letdown after winning last week. Thomas played well last week and was second in Shots Gained: Approach-the-Green. I’ll take Thomas in this matchup.
Eckroat, Austin -114 vs. Schenk, Adam
Eckroat has been popping up on more leaderboards of late and he just might be in contention for the win this week. The Rocket Mortgage Classic has been a good place for first-time winners, with that happening in the first and third editions of this tournament. I’ll take Eckroat in this matchup.
Kim, Tom -155 vs. Davis, Cameron
Kim finished seventh a year ago when he played this event and closed with a 63. He has the right mentality for this tournament, as he plays aggressively. I expect Kim to be in contention, so I will lay the price in this matchup against Davis, who has also played well in this event in the past.
Moore, Taylor +100 vs. Hadwin, Adam
I will take Moore in this matchup at even money. I don’t think this course fits Hadwin at all despite him finishing in a tie for 4th in 2020. He missed the cut in 2021 and last year he tied for 37th. I’ll take Moore in this matchup.
