July 11, 2023The best players in the world are in Scotland this week to play the Genesis Scottish Open in preparation for next week’s Open Championship. Rory McIlroy is listed as the favorite at BetRivers. McIlroy is ranked No. 3 in the latest World Golf Rankings, yet he is listed with golf betting odds that are lower than World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy is listed at +650 at BetRivers, while Scheffler is +750. No other players are listed at single-digit odds. It is a strong field with seven of the world’s top 10 players in the field. Let’s look at Genesis Scottish Open picks.
Venue: The Renaissance Club is a par 70 that measures 7,237 yards. It is a links course and will be hosting this event for the fifth time.
Last Year: Xander Schauffele won last year by one shot over Kurt Kitayama. Schauffele began the final round with a two-shot lead and led by four shots after five holes, but he lost the lead on the back nine and nearly lost the tournament. Tom Kim finished in third place, while Patrick Cantlay and Tommy Fleetwood tied for fourth place.

McIlroy, Rory +650
Another favorite bit the dust last week when Henley didn’t win in the Quad Cities. McIlroy is definitely capable of winning this week, as he hits the ball farther than anyone on the PGA Tour, but I am not going to step out and bet him as the favorite considering how badly golf betting favorites have done this year.
Value Picks
Scheffler, Scottie +750
I really thought Scottie Scheffler would be listed as the favorite and that would mean I couldn’t take him because favorites lose on a regular basis. Since Scheffler is not favored, I can put him in here. He is without a doubt the best golfer in the world and capable of winning anytime he tees it up. He leads the field in a number of categories, and he has finished in the top five in his last six events.
Fitzpatrick, Matt +2000
Fitzpatrick finished in a tie for 6th last year in this event. He won at the RBC Heritage earlier this year. He does a lot of things right, as he ranks in the Top 50 in total driving and he ranks 17th in scrambling and 11th in total putting. He knows this course well and I expect him to be in contention this week.
Kim, Tom +6000
I am shocked that the odds on Kim are this high. He is capable of playing well wherever he goes. He is not yet on the level of Scheffler, but Kim played well in this event a year ago and he won’t be overwhelmed by the field. I think he is worth a flyer at big odds.
Rai, Aaron +8000
Rai has played well on the PGA Tour this season. He has three top 10 finishes. He ranks 24th in strokes gained tee-to-green. He also ranks 33rd in total driving. Rai won this event in 2020 so he definitely has a fondness for this course. I think he is worth a longshot flyer.
Detry, Thomas +12500
You won’t see me take Detry that often, but this is a good week to do so, as he has played well at The Renaissance Club in the past. He has averaged 68.56 for his 16 rounds on this course. He lost a playoff in this event two years ago and tied for 10th last year.
