August 1, 2023Wyndham Championship Matchup Picks
August 1, 2023None of the world’s top players are in the field this week for the Wyndham Championship, as the FedExCup Playoffs begin next week. It is all about players on the bubble, as only the Top 70 players qualify for next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship. Sam Burns is the highest ranked player in the field, as he is 20th in this week’s World Golf Rankings. Burns is not listed as the favorite, however, as it is Sungjae Im listed as the favorite at odds of +1800 at BetRivers. Hideki Matsuyama is listed as the second betting choice at +1900 and he is followed by Russell Henley at +2000 and Burns at +2200. Ben Taylor is currently on the FedExCup Playoffs bubble, as he sits at No. 70. He is just behind Sam Ryder, Sam Stevens and Austin Eckroat who are 67-69. All of those four players are in the field. Ben Griffin sits at No. 71, while Cam Davis is No. 72. Justin Thomas is one of the more recognizable names in the field, but he isn’t playing well and is No. 79 in the standings.
Let’s look at Wyndham Championship picks.
Venue: Sedgefield Country Club is a par 70 that measures 7,131 yards. The winning score has been at least 20-under par in six of the last seven Wyndham Championships.
Last Year: Tom Kim shot a final round 61 to blitz the field and win by five shots. Sungjae Im led after 54 holes but shot just 2-under on Sunday and finished in a tie for second with John Huh.

Sungjae Im +1800
Another golf betting favorite bit the dust last week when Tony Finau failed to win. This week it is another favorite who looks vulnerable. It has been quite a while since Im won an event, as you have to go back to October of 2021 for his last win. Im has plenty of talent, but he only has two PGA Tour wins in his career. I sure can’t back him as a favorite.
Value Picks
Matsuyama, Hideki +1900
You can definitely make a case that Hideki Matsuyama should be listed as the favorite this week, but like Im, he hasn’t won in a while. This course is one where his drought could end. He is really good in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and if his putter could just be decent, he would have already won this season. I think he has some value against a weak field at odds of nearly 20-1.
Lowry, Shane +3300
Another player who shines in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green is Lowry who ranks 21st on the PGA Tour in that category. He also needs a big week just to make it into the FedExCup Playoffs. I think he is being ignored a bit this week, as I think his odds should be closer to what Matsuyama is listed at. I’ll take Lowry at 33-1.
Poston, J.T. +3300
Can Poston build on last week or will he have a letdown? He was never really in contention last week, as he was well back of Hodges, so I don’t see a letdown. There is no question he is playing well with three top six finishes in his last four events. He should be able to take advantage of this course and shoot some low scores.
Davis, Cameron +4000
Davis is a player who prefers shorter courses and if he is to make the FedExCup Playoffs he needs a good week, as he sits in 69th place. He has played well on this course in the past with a couple of top 22 finishes. He has also played well on Donald Ross courses in the past. I think he can contend for the win this week and we get 40-1 odds.
Rai, Aaron +4000
Rai comes in playing well right now and he ranks highly in accuracy and GIR which should be important on this tree-lined course. He has also been putting well lately, gaining strokes in each of his last four starts. He can wrap up his spot for next week with a decent effort, as he is currently 61st in the standings. This course has seen a lot of first-time PGA Tour winners and Rai just might be the next one.
Noren, Alex +6600
Noren needs a huge week to make the FedExCup Playoffs, as he must finish in the top three. He comes in playing well with a number of Top 25 finishes. Noren is another player who does better on short courses and we get him at a longshot price this week.
