October 9, 2023Shriners Children’s Open Matchup Picks
October 11, 2023The PGA Tour heads to Las Vegas this week for the Shriners Children’s Open where defending champion Tom Kim is listed as the favorite. Kim won last year’s event when Patrick Cantlay triple bogeyed the 18th hole. Kim is listed as the favorite at odds of +1000. The only other player listed with odds of less than +2000 is Ludvig Aberg at odds of +1200. If you like longshots then this could be the week for you, as there are some big prices on the board. Last week it was Luke List winning at odds of +5000. This tournament will also be in the news because of Lexi Thompson. She will become the seventh woman to play in a PGA Tour event. Let’s look at Shriners Children’s Open picks.

Venue: TPC Summerlin is a par 71 that measures 7,255 yards. The course does have numerous water hazards but more often than not the players shoot low scores on this course.
Last Year: Tom Kim won last year’s event by three shots. It was his second PGA Tour win before the age of 21. His 24-under score tied the tournament record. Patrick Cantlay finished in a tie for second and he was tied for the lead on the 72nd hole but he hooked his shot into a bush and made triple bogey. Matt NeSmith finished in a tie with Cantlay for second place.

Favorite
Tom Kim +1000
Another golf betting favorite bit the dust last week when Ludvig Aberg lost in a five-way playoff. Kim is the defending champion and there is no question he could win this tournament. I don’t take golf betting favorites except on rare occasions simply because they are not profitable in the long run. I won’t take Kim this week, but I also won’t argue with anyone who does.
Value Picks
Ludvig Aberg +1200
I didn’t back Aberg last week but I said I would be taking him a lot going forward. I get an immediate chance this week because he is not listed as the favorite. He didn’t play as well as he is capable of playing and he still nearly won last week. He should be more rested this week after the Ryder Cup and there is no reason he can’t get his first PGA Tour win this week.
Si Woo Kim +2500
There are not that many players in the field this week who know how to win. Kim has won four times on the PGA Tour and all of his wins have come on Bermudagrass courses. He plays well on short courses where the scoring is relatively easy and that is the case this week.
Andrew Putnam +2800
Another player who does well on short courses is Putnam. He is one of the top players in the field this week and he usually plays well out west. He won the Barracuda Championship in 2018 and he has a number of good finishes at PGA West in California. He has played well on this course in the past and I expect him to be in the mix this week.
Sam Ryder +5500
Ryder has played well at Summerlin in the past and in this weak field he can definitely compete. In his last 16 rounds on this course, he has shot a 62, two 64s, two 65s and two 66s. Could we see another big underdog win this week? Ryder is listed with odds of 55-1.
Davis Thompson +6000
Thompson has played well in the west in his limited PGA action and he is now getting the benefit of playing these courses for the second time. He finished 12th in this event a year ago. He continues to gain confidence and it may not be long before he gets his first PGA Tour win.
