The Sentry Odds and Picks
January 2, 2024Online Bingo Tips
January 3, 2024The Sentry takes place in Maui this week with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler listed as the betting favorite. He is listed at odds of +500 at Caesars. The only other players listed at single-digit odds are Viktor Hovland at +900 and Ludvig Aberg at +950. This is the first PGA Tour event of the new calendar year and the first Signature event of the new season and that means a $20 million dollar prize purse with $3.6 million going to the winner. All of last year’s PGA Tour winners are eligible in addition to the Top 50 in the FedExCup standings from last season. The only player eligible who is not playing is Rory McIlroy. And no, the LIV players are not yet eligible, so we won’t see defending champion Jon Rahm this week. This event has no cut and will feature a field of 59 players. Let’s look at The Sentry matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Jon Rahm
Tournament Notes: Scores will be low this week because the course is a par 73 with big greens and warm weather. The only defense for Kapalua is the wind so when the winds are calm, the scores will be excellent.

Golf Picks
Scottie Scheffler -155 vs. Viktor Hovland
I don’t take favorites to win the overall tournament, because their odds are too low and are not profitable, but I am not afraid to lay prices in the matchups. In this case we get the No. 1 player in the world who is coming off a win at the Hero World Challenge. Hovland is coming off an excellent season but he has never done anything in this event. I’ll lay the price and take Scheffler.
Jordan Spieth -175 vs. Hideki Matsuyama
In the odds article I went with Spieth and I am taking him here as well. He has shown me enough that I think he can now be trusted. He won this event in 2016 and he has finished in the Top 15 a total of five times. Matsuyama has really not been threatening leaderboards of late so he could be a player to go against until he turns things around.
Eric Cole -120 vs. Cameron Davis
Cole just continues to play well, as he had four top four finishes in the FedExCup Fall schedule. He usually putts well which will be important this week as the scores will be low. Cole ranked in the Top 30 a year ago in Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5 scoring. I’ll take him at the small price against Davis.
Tom Kim -110 vs. Sungjae Im
I think Kim is going to take the next step this season to be among the best golfers in the game. He led the field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green in this event a year ago, as he tied for 5th. I know that Im has played well in this event in the past, but I still think Kim is the better player, especially on a course that demands low scoring.
Sam Burns -130 vs. Cameron Young
I expect to see Burns on a lot of leaderboards this season and I think it starts in Maui. I know that Young has shown some flashes from time to time, but I think Burns is more consistent and has the ability to go low.
