Worst Bets to Make in Craps
January 15, 2024The American Express Matchup Picks
January 17, 2024The PGA Tour gets out of Hawaii and goes to California this week for The American Express where Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite at Caesars. Last week it was not a strong field, but that changes this week where we get to see 22 of the world’s Top 50 tee it up. Scheffler is listed with odds of +550, while Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay are listed at +900. No other golfer is listed with odds of less than +2000. The full field will play all three courses this week, as the Pro-Am portion of the tournament will conclude after the third round. All of the players will play the Pete Dye Stadium Course, La Quinta Country Club and the Nicklaus Tournament Course once and then there will be a 54-hole cut. The low 65 and ties will play the final round on Sunday on the Stadium Course. Let’s look at The American Express odds and picks.

Favorite
Scottie Scheffler +550
It was another golf betting favorite that lost last week as Ludvig Aberg was never in contention. I say week after week that you can’t take favorites to win golf tournaments on the PGA Tour and make money. Having said that, if a favorite is going to win, it could be this week, as Scheffler is the clear standout in this event. I am going to stand firm though, and not take Scheffler this week, simply because he is listed as the favorite.
Golf Picks
Tom Kim +2800
There is no question that the scores are going to be low this week and Kim is a player who can shoot low scores on a regular basis. I expect Kim to be in contention this week and we get 28-1 odds.
J.T. Poston +3500
You have to give Poston a shot based on the way he is playing and because his two previous PGA Tour wins have come on courses where scoring is good. Poston has also played well on Pete Dye courses in the past. I give him a shot to be in contention this week at big odds.
Jason Day +3500
Jason Day is one of those players who I have not had a good handle on through the years. His injury history has simply annoyed me because I don’t know when he can be trusted. He comes in playing well and he is capable of putting up low scores.
Eric Cole +3500
I think Cole is going to get his first PGA Tour win soon and it might be this week. This tournament has been a good one for players looking for their first PGA Tour title. He ranked 1st in Total Birdies a year ago on the PGA Tour and I think he will make a lot of them this week.
Taylor Montgomery +6500
Montgomery has been seen on more leaderboards this season, including last week. When he gets hot, he tends to put up some really good scores and he is on a nice run of late. He also finished 5th in this event a year ago in his first try.
Akshay Bhatia +6500
We have seen Bhatia show up on leaderboards early this year. He is very familiar with the courses, as he was born in Los Angeles. He has four top 20 finishes in this last five PGA Tour starts.
Adam Schenk +10000
I will throw one big longshot in here and go with Schenk. He ranks really well in Shots Gained: Approach and he is a very good putter. He struggled in this event a year ago because of some wayward shots. I think he is being undervalued this week based on what he did a year ago. It should be noted that some previous winners of this tournament had missed the cut in previous years and then won this event.
