January 23, 2024The Farmers Insurance Open begins on Wednesday with Xander Schauffele listed as the favorite. Don’t forget that this event begins on Wednesday and concludes on Saturday because the PGA Tour doesn’t want to compete with NFL Championship Sunday. There is no question that the scores won’t be as low as they have been recently, as Torrey Pines is a much stiffer test than what the players have seen the last few weeks. I went 3-2 with the matchups last week at The American Express. Let’s look at Farmers Insurance Open matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Max Homa
Tournament Notes: The Farmers Insurance Open is played at the Torrey Pines North and South Courses. Each player will play both of the courses on either Wednesday and Thursday and then those players that make the cut will play the South Course on Friday and Saturday. The North Course is much easier, as 7,258 yards, while the South Course is 7,765 yards. The South Course was the longest course on the PGA Tour schedule a year ago. It was also the hardest course of all non-majors on the PGA Tour in two of the last three years. The two courses should be a little easier this year, as rain leading up to the event will have softened the turf a bit.

Golf Matchup Picks
Sahith Theegala -135 vs. Will Zalatoris
I think it is great that Zalatoris is getting back into form, but he is not yet there. I think it may take him a couple months to get back to where he was. On the other hand, Theegala is in fine form and proving that he can contend on a regular basis. I’ll lay the price and take Theegala in this matchup.
Taylor Pendrith -115 vs. Mackenzie Hughes
One of my longshots this week is Pendrith so since I took him in the odds preview I will also take him here. The price is fair and I am definitely not afraid of going against Hughes. I will take Pendrith at the small price in this matchup.
Harris English -115 vs. Shane Lowry
I am a little surprised that English isn’t a solid favorite in this matchup. I went with English as one of my picks to contend for the win and I think he is the clear choice in this matchup against Lowry. We haven’t seen much of Lowry lately and even when he has played, he hasn’t looked that good. I’ll take English in this matchup at the small price.
Luke List -120 vs. Patrick Rodgers
List is turning into a player who can be trusted and he definitely likes Torrey Pines. He has finished in the Top 25 four times including a win in 2022. He comes in playing well with six Top 25 finishes in his last nine starts. I’ll take him in this matchup against Rodgers.
Adrian Meronk -115 vs. Will Zalatoris
We are about to find out how good Adrian Meronk really is. He will be making his PGA Tour debut and he comes in ranked No. 1 among 2023 DP World Tour players. He won the DP Player of the Year and he already has a second and a 10th place finish this year. I said earlier that I still think it is going to take Zalatoris some time to get back to his old self and it seems very unlikely he will do so on a tough track at Torrey Pines. I’ll take Meronk in this matchup.
