The Farmers Insurance Open takes place this week and keep in mind that the event begins on Wednesday and concludes on Saturday. The PGA Tour made the decision a few years ago that they didn’t want to compete against the NFL on Championship Sunday and decided to change the Farmers Insurance Open to a Wednesday-Saturday schedule. Amateur Nick Dunlap made history last week by becoming the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour in 33 years. If not for the NFL, his accomplishment would have completely dominated Sunday’s sports news. This week’s event is in southern California and it is Xander Schauffele who is listed as the betting favorite at BetRivers. A surprisingly, strong field is assembled for this event considering it is not an elevated event. Joining Schauffele are Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Sahith Theegala, among others. Players will alternate between Torrey Pines’ North and South courses on Wednesday and Thursday and then play the South course for the final two rounds. Venue: Torrey Pines GC South Course measures 7,765 yards and is a par 72. The North Course is par 72 that measures 7,258 yards.
Last Year: Max Homa won last year, as he shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday to win by two shots over Keegan Bradley. Collin Morikawa finished in third, while Sam Ryder, Sungaje Im and Sahith Theegala tied for fourth.

It was another golf betting favorite that lost last week as Scottie Scheffler was never a threat to win. I say week after week that you can’t take favorites to win golf tournaments on the PGA Tour and make money. Schauffele played well last week and he is always capable of having a great week, but you should know by now that I almost never take favorites and I am not taking Schauffele at this number.
Golf Picks
Homa, Max +1200
I think you can make a case that Homa should be favored. I don’t take defending champions that often but Homa stands out. He has done really well in the past when defending titles and he knows how to win. He has already won six times on the PGA Tour. I’ll take Homa at double-digit odds.
Day, Jason +2800
I have said before that I am leery about taking Day simply because of his injury history. I think you have to look at him at this number considering he is tied for the most wins on a course with a Poa Annua or Bentgrass Poa mix since 2008 with four wins. He has played well at Torrey Pines in the past and he comes into this event playing well with three top 20 finishes.
English, Harris +4000
English played well in Hawaii with a couple of top 15 finishes and he has played well at Torrey Pines in the past. He lost in a playoff in 2015 and he has three other top 15 finishes. English has won four times on the PGA Tour and two of those have been on a coast. I think he can contend this week and we get big odds.
Straka, Sepp +4500
Did you know that Straka is up to No. 17 in the latest World Golf Rankings? He continues to go under the radar with a lot of people. Straka does a lot of things right and ranks highly in a number of PGA stats including Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green and on Approach. He could be in the mix this week and we get a nice number.
Pendrith, Taylor +10000
Have you noticed the payouts lately for the winners on the PGA Tour. It seems like a big longshot wins every week. Pendrith has the type of game that should do well at Torrey Pines and I will take a flyer on him at huge odds.
