February 6, 2024Super Bowl LVIII Same Game Parlay: 49ers vs. Chiefs
February 6, 2024Scottie Scheffler is favored to win this week’s WM Phoenix Open at odds of +500 at Caesars. Scheffler has won this event in each of the last two years, so he will be trying to become the first golfer since Steve Stricker from 2009-2011 to win the same event three years in a row. The field this week is pretty good with five of the world’s top-10 ranked golfers expected to play. Joining Scheffler are Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick and Brian Harman, but the second choice in the betting odds is actually Justin Thomas at +1000. He is currently ranked No. 19 in the latest World Golf Rankings. Let’s look at WM Phoenix Open odds and picks.

Favorite
Scottie Scheffler +500
I sound like a broken record, but another golf betting favorite lost last week when Rory McIlroy was never in contention at Pebble Beach. I like Scheffler and there is no question he can win this week, but his putting is still a bit of an issue and the bottom line is that I almost never take golf betting favorites and that means I am not taking Scheffler this week.
Golf Picks
Justin Thomas +1000
I agree with the oddsmakers this week, as I think Thomas has a decent chance to win. He come in playing well and even though he hasn’t won since 2022, that should change soon. He finished 3rd at The American Express and he was 6th last week at Pebble Beach. He has played well in this event in the past with five top 20 finishes.
Sam Burns +2000
Burns has not won a stroke-play event since 2022 so he is another player overdue for a win. He usually does well on short courses that demand good scoring, as in three of his previous four wins he shot -17 or greater. Burns has played well on Poa Trivialis greens in the past and I expect him to contend this week.
Jordan Spieth +2000
I said earlier this year that I am going to take Spieth more often, as I think he has made a number of improvements to his game for this season. He is definitely capable of going low and the conditions this week should make for a scoring fest and Spieth can win in that situation.
Si Woo Kim +6000
Kim is a player who does well on short courses. He has won on short courses in the past and like Burns, his winning scores were very good at -21, -23 and -18. Kim doesn’t win that often, but when scoring is expected to be good and the course is short, he has a chance and we get him at big odds this week.
Kevin Yu +8000
I am surprised the odds on Yu are this high. He lives in Scottsdale and his game really should suit this course. He ranked 14th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green last season. He has shown that he likes shorter courses that demand low scoring. He ranked 2nd for Stokes Gained: Approach and 11th for Strokes Gained: Tee to Green last week. I give him a chance to be in the mix this week at big odds.
