February 21, 2024The PGA Tour heads to Mexico this week for the Mexico Open at Vidanta. Not many top golfers are making the trip so defending champion Tony Finau is listed as a solid favorite. If Finau doesn’t win there could be a lot of value in some of the other golfers and it could be we see another big longshot win on the PGA Tour. I said last week it was time to turn the corner with a big week with the matchups and that is exactly what happened, as I went 4-1 with The Genesis Invitational matchup picks. Let’s look at Mexico Open at Vidanta matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Tony Finau
Tournament Notes: Vidanta Vallarta is a par 71 that has five par 3 holes and four par-5 holes. Two of the par 5’s are more than 600 yards and two of the par 3’s are more than 200 yards. The course can stretch to 7,456 yards so distance will be very important. There are 106 bunkers on the course but the fairways are wide.

Golf Matchup Picks
Keith Mitchell -140 vs. Doug Ghim
One of the players I took in the odds preview was Mitchell and I’ll take him in this matchup against Ghim. Mitchell is strong tee-to-green and he is off to a good start this season with two top 20 finishes in five starts. I’ll lay the price and take Mitchell in this matchup.
Thomas Detry -110 vs. Taylor Pendrith
Detry is in his second season on the PGA Tour and he is playing well, as he is up to 27th in the FedExCup standings. He had a tie for fourth at Pebble Beach. He is long off the tee and he should do well on this course in Mexico. I’ll take Detry in this matchup.
Brandon Wu -110 vs. Ryan Fox
Wu has played really well in this event and his form really hasn’t mattered. That is good news because Wu has only one top 25 finish in the last eight months. I’ll still go with Wu based on his excellent play in this event in the last two years.
Greyson Sigg -110 vs. Chesson Hadley
I’ll take Sigg in this matchup as I go against Hadley. It will be tough for Hadley this week because he simply lacks the power to do well on this course. He is coming off a missed gut at the WM Phoenix Open. I’ll take Sigg in this matchup.
Patrick Rodgers -120 vs. Davis Thompson
Rodgers has played well in this event in the past with a couple of Top 10 finishes. He is still looking for his first PGA Tour win and against a weaker field in Mexico this is a good spot. Thompson has played well for the most part but I don’t know that this course will suit his game. I’ll take Rodgers in this matchup.
Erik Van Rooyen -120 vs. Thorbjorn Olesen
Van Rooyen won in early November on Paspalum and he has played well since. He was just one shot out of the lead after the first and second rounds in this event a year ago. Olesen has been a fixture on the DP World Tour and now he will be playing on the PGA Tour. I think there will be some adjustment for him. I’ll take Van Rooyen in this matchup.
