Germany’s top football league was founded in 1963. Since its inception, it has been dominated by Bayern Munich, but we have seen other champions rise and fall over the decades. There aren’t as many champions from the east side of the country due to the country being split during the Cold War, but some of the Berlin clubs and Red Bull Leipzig are hoping to change things.

Betting on the German Bundesliga

There are plenty of options for betting the German Bundesliga. Most betting is done on a game basis, where you can place a wager on the three-way line, moneyline, or total. However, you will also find betting available for props and futures.
Props like the first goal scorer, the number of corner kicks in a game, the number of cards in a game, and more are available for all Bundesliga games. Additionally, there are futures available prior to the start of the season and at certain points during the campaign. These can involve betting odds to win the Bundesliga, relegation betting odds, and more.

Bayern Munich is the lone powerhouse in the Bundesliga. They have 30 league titles and 10 runner-up finishes in their history, and all but one of those championships came in the modern era. There isn’t a team with the same resources and fan support as Bayern, explaining why this is the only German club with multiple Champions League titles. Bayern Munich won three straight Champions League crowns between 1974 and 1976, and they won the 2020 Champions League.

The second-most successful team in German football history is 1. FC Nurnberg. They haven’t won a league title since the late 1960s though, and eight of their nine league titles came before the foundation of the Bundesliga. Nurnberg have been a yo-yo club since that point, moving between the first and second tiers of German soccer.

Borussia Dortmund are the second biggest club in Germany. Dortmund have been Bayern Munich’s biggest rival in recent years, and the two square off in Der Klassiker twice a year. They were the most recent team aside from Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga, and they are one of two other clubs in Germany to win the Champions League in their history.

Schalke 04 have seven titles in their history. Six of those titles came in the mid-1930s and early-1940s, casting a pall over those wins, but they did win one of the last German titles before the foundation of the Bundesliga in 1958. Unfortunately, this proud club might not be competitive for a long time. Schalke are set to crash out of the Bundesliga with an awful 2020-21 campaign, and they are over €200 million in debt.

The third German club to win the Champions League is Hamburger SV. They have won six league titles in their history, and they had a golden era in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Red Shorts have also won three DFB-Pokal Cups in their history.

Werder Bremen have been one of the Bundesliga’s better teams over the last 40 years. They have won three league titles and five DFB-Pokal Cups during this time, but they had to struggle to survive relegation during the 2019-20 season. It might take some time for this club to be competitive again, yet they have a history that means you can’t count them out.
It’s only a matter of time before Red Bull Leipzig win a Bundesliga title. This club’s meteoric rise through German football has been fueled by its title sponsor. Red Bull Leipzig were founded in 2009, and they made it to the Bundesliga in 2016. Their debut season was a smashing success as RB Leipzig finished runner-up, and they finished in third place during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. This might be the club that can finally knock Bayern Munich off its perch.
