November 7, 2021The Super Bowl is what every team in the NFL is striving to win. Although it is a relatively new title compared to other sports, it means more than any other championship in the United States. All 32 teams and over 1,000 players and coaches long for the day they can lift the Lombardi Trophy.
Betting on Super Bowl Futures
We have seen some longshots pay off in a big way in recent years. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were 60-1 to win Super Bowl LV shortly after they failed to make the previous season’s playoffs. The addition of Tom Brady made the Bucs instant Super Bowl contenders though, leading to some very happy bettors in the Tampa Bay area.
The 2017 Philadelphia Eagles were also 60-1 in the preseason, and they were still available at 40-1 just before the start of the regular season. They went 7-9 and missed the playoffs the previous year, but Carson Wentz led the team to the division title before suffering a torn ACL. Philly was counted out with Nick Foles starting in his stead, yet the Eagles overcame the odds to win as an underdog three straight times in the playoffs.
A team that was at least 20-1 to win the Super Bowl prior to the start of the season won the Lombardi Trophy in four out of five years between the 2007 and 2011 seasons. The New York Giants were able to accomplish the feat twice, most notably during the 2007 season. The 2007 Giants were 30-1 in the preseason and 50-1 at the start of the playoffs. They squeaked past all three of their NFC opponents in the playoffs before pulling off a huge upset with their 17-14 win over the 18-0 New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
Currently, the biggest longshot to win the Super Bowl is the 1999 Los Angeles Rams. The Rams went 4-12 and had just one Pro Bowl player the previous season. Starting quarterback Trent Green was injured in the preseason, leading to former Arena football standout Kurt Warner taking over under center. Warner led the Greatest Show on Turf to one of the greatest seasons we’ve ever seen, and the franchise claimed its first Super Bowl title.

The New England Patriots are the greatest dynasty in the Super Bowl era. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick left their mark on the NFL as the duo led the franchise to six Super Bowl titles in the span of two decades. New England pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history when the Pats beat the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, and that spurred a run that will probably never be topped.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants each won two Super Bowls in a five-year stretch. Both teams were led by their defenses with Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning making some clutch plays along the way. Other solid teams have emerged, but any other potential dynasties in the making have largely been thwarted by the Pats.
Kansas City appears poised to take over New England’s spot as a perennial contender. The Chiefs have the best quarterback in the game in Patrick Mahomes. They have a bevy of offensive talent surrounding him too, so many people are expecting him to make a run at Brady.
