The top league in English football is the English Premier League. This league is younger than almost any other league as it was founded in 1992 by the top teams in England’s first tier breaking away from the Football League. There are only 20 teams in the Premier League, and the difference between playing there and in the English Championship is night and day. The most successful team in English history is Manchester United. The Red Devils have won England’s top division 20 times, and they have claimed 13 of those banners in the Premier League era. Alex Ferguson retired as the most successful manager of his generation, and he also led the club to two Champions League titles. Manchester United have also finished league-runner up a record 16 times in their history.
Liverpool has one less title than Manchester United. The Reds were long the most dominant team in English football as they continually won the league during the 1970s and 1980s. They are the most successful English club in the Champions League too although they weren’t eligible to play in the competition for the last half of the 1980s due to the Heysel Stadium disaster. Liverpool was unable to win the Premier League until the 2019-20 season, as Jurgen Klopp steered the team to renewed glory.
They have fallen on hard time in recent years, but Arsenal have been one of the most successful clubs in England over the years. The Gunners won England’s top flight five times in the 1930s, and they had another period of greatness under Arsene Wenger. However, they have not been truly competitive since the early 2000s. Wenger’s dismissal has been followed by some forgettable moments, and Arsenal may be surpassed as a Big Six club in the near future.
Everton are the next most successful team with nine league titles. The Toffees last won the league in the mid-1980s, but they were occasionally contending right beside rivals Everton. They are no longer considered a Big Six club, yet they were at the start of the Premier League era.
Nearly all of Aston Villa’s success came more than 100 years ago. Five of their seven league titles were won in the 1890s, and they have just one league title since 1910. The Lions only recently returned to the Premier League, so it’s likely going to take some time for them to be competitive once more.
Manchester City and Chelsea are new members of the Big Six, and they have been two of the best teams in the 21st Century. The Citizens have won seven league titles and four of those came in the 2010s. Their new owners have made them an instant competitor, as they aren’t afraid to take losses in order to win titles.
Those owners are following in the footsteps of Roman Abramovich with Chelsea. Abramovich made Chelsea immediately competitive, and the club has won five of its six league titles under his watch.
