Italy’s Serie A was founded in 1898, and it evolved into its current form during the 1929 season. It has been in existence for almost 100 years, and it is considered one of the world’s top premier domestic leagues right alongside England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, and Germany’s Bundesliga. Three clubs have been more successful than anyone else, but there is an easier path to the top in this league than those other major leagues.

Juventus won nine straight titles from 2011-12 to 2019-20. The Old Lady have 36 scudettos in their history, and that’s just as many as both Milan clubs combined. They are the undisputed kings of Italian football with their long-term success, but this team has infamously come up short in the Champions League time after time.
No club has finished runner-up in the Champions League more often than Juventus. They have been to the Champions League Finals nine times, yet they have only taken home the title twice. Juventus have lost five straight Champions League Finals since their last win in 1996, suffering some heartbreaking losses along the way.
Inter Milan dominated the league during the last half of the 2000s. They won five straight league titles (partially thanks to the officiating scandal that rocked Italian football) to tie city rival AC Milan with 18 league titles. Their first scudetto came all the way back in 1910.
Internazionale have been more successful in the Champions League than Juventus. They have won the league three times, including back-to-back titles in 1964 and 1965.
City rival AC Milan have also won 18 league titles. They were the last team to win a title before Juventus went on their run last decade, and we have seen several sensational talents wear the red, white, and black over the years. AC Milan are the most successful Italian club in Champions League history with seven titles to their credit. That’s the second-most of any club other than Real Madrid.
It’s been almost 100 years since Genoa last won a league title. They have the third most Serie A championships of any Italian team though. Genoa have won nine scudettos in their history, but that last title came in 1924. A lot of their success came from Genoa being one of the first Italian clubs, and they are currently the oldest team in Italian football history. Unfortunately, Genoa hasn’t been competitive for a long time.
Torino, Bologna, and Pro Vercelli have all won seven Serie A titles. Pro Vercelli is no longer a club, but the other two teams are still in Italy’s top tier. Neither Torino nor Bologna have won a league crown in over four decades.
Italy’s capital and biggest city has not produced a lot of great teams. AS Roma and Lazio have combined to win five league titles, but their histories are filled with a lot of heartache. Roma have finished runner-up in the league a whopping 14 times, while Lazio were runner-up six times.
Napoli was one of Italy’s best clubs in the late 1980s with Diego Maradona joining the roster, and that led to the team’s only two league titles.
