The 2021 regular season has officially wrapped up and boy, did it go out with a bang. The SEC title game was maybe the most surprising result with Alabama dismantling top-ranked Georgia by a score of 41-24. Baylor outlasted Oklahoma State to keep the Cowboys out of the College Football Playoff picture. Michigan punched its ticket, landing their first Big Ten title since 2004.
In the other Power Five conference championships, Oregon was ousted by Utah for a second time this season while Pitt made its case as the ACC’s top team. Both the Utes and Panthers will be featured in New Year’s Six bowls.
With the campaign now over, bowl selections have been made. Today, Betmaker previews each matchup heading into the postseason.
All college football odds are provided courtesy of SugarHouse sportsbook. We’ll start with the biggest matchups of the bowl season which will decide this year’s national champion.
College Football Playoff (Dec. 31)
Goodyear Cotton Bowl – Cincinnati vs. Alabama (-13.5)
Alabama pulled off a massive upset in the SEC title game by upending undefeated Georgia in a 17-point win. The Tide entered the game as underdogs but rose to the occasion, nabbing their sixth conference championship in the last eight years.
With the win, Alabama earned the No. 1 overall seed pitting them in a matchup against No. 4 Cincinnati. The Bearcats capped off an undefeated season with a 35-20 win over Houston in the AAC title game. The Crimson Tide are currently favored by two touchdowns. They hold the top College Football Playoff championship odds of any team in the field (+110).
Capital One Orange Bowl – Georgia (-7.5) vs. Michigan
The second of the CFP contests is a bit more intriguing. Georgia stumbled last weekend but they were college football’s top team in the regular season. Vegas hasn’t forgotten that, listing the Bulldogs as a touchdown favorite over Michigan.
The Wolverines have been rolling of late though, ousting Maryland, Ohio State, and Iowa in consecutive weeks to win the Big Ten. In those wins, Michigan’s offense is averaging 48 points a game. Can they keep that up against a Georgia defense that surrendered just 6.9 points per game to opponents in the regular season?
