November 18, 2022At long last, the 2022 World Cup is set to start on Sunday, November 20. This will be the first Winter World Cup due to the brutal summer conditions in Qatar, but there is still a tremendous amount of anticipation for this tournament even after the change in schedule. There has been a shift in the World Cup betting odds towards the South American teams over the last couple weeks as Brazil and Argentina are now the favorites and action has moved away from teams like France and England.
The 2022 World Cup will take place in Qatar from November 20-December 18, 2022. We will see 32 teams from all over the world compete in this tournament, and the final match will be played in Lusail Iconic Stadium just north of the capital of Doha.

To no one’s surprise, the soccer betting odds have five-time World Cup champions Brazil listed as the World Cup favorites for this event. Brazil has been in good form ahead of the World Cup, cruising to wins over Ghana and Tunisia in September, and they have more talent than any other country. Even though he is disliked in the US, Neymar is an incredible talent in the prime of his career, and Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison have been superb for their club teams. This is an experienced back line, even if Thiago Silva and Dani Alves might be a little long in the tooth, and Brazil boasts two world class goalkeepers in Alisson and Ederson.
In the summer, Argentina was placed among the second group of World Cup contenders behind Brazil, France, and England. However, there has been growing buzz about this team and belief that Lionel Messi might finally be able to deliver his country a World Cup. Lautaro Martinez, Paulo Dybala, and Angel Di Maria can complement Messi up top, but the big question is this back line. Nicolas Otamendi and German Pezzella are the only two players with more than 20 caps for the national team.
The defending World Cup champions may not be able to live up to their potential in Qatar. There are rumors of a lot of locker room drama among France’s national team, and we could see a repeat of this country’s collapse after winning the 1998 World Cup. France has just one win in its last six matches, and the attack has been found wanting despite stars like Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Karim Benzema, and Olivier Giroud up top. There are major concerns in the midfield with Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante off the roster due to injury.
Spain was formerly over 10-1 to win the World Cup, but the odds to win the World Cup for La Roja have dropped although they are in the Group of Death with Germany, Japan, and Costa Rica. Unai Simon is one of the most underrated goalkeepers in the world, and he has a very experienced back line in front of him. There’s a lot of talent in the midfield with captain Sergio Busquets leading the charge, and it appears that the goal-scoring issues have been solved.
Perhaps the best value on the board lies in Belgium to win the World Cup at almost 20-1. The Red Devils made it to the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, and their Golden Generation is still mostly intact albeit on the wrong side of 30. Kevin De Bruyne is one of the top set-up men in the game, and Eden Hazard can still put his country on his back for stretches. Romelu Lukaku is a world class finisher that makes the most of his chances, and the talent up top is there. Thibaut Courtois is an elite goalkeeper, but this back line is not what it was four years ago.
