February 24, 2025I don’t think folks in Philly envisioned this before the NBA season began. Among the favorites on the NBA futures odds board at the start of the campaign, the Philadelphia 76ers are playing themselves out of a chance to compete for a spot in the play-in tournament. Going off as an 11-point favorite at Caesars sportsbook against Brooklyn on Saturday, the Sixers dropped their seventh straight game, 105-103. They’ve been a mess at the betting window as well failing to cover the NBA point spread in eight consecutive outings. After getting steamrolled by Cleveland and Boston, the New York Knicks look to get their swag back following wins and covers in the first two meetings with Philly.

The Joel Embiid saga reached a head on Saturday when the former MVP was relegated to the bench for the fourth quarter in a game against Brooklyn. The oft-injured star has played in just 18 games this season averaging 24.3 points and 8.2 rebounds. While those numbers are respectable for your average NBA star they aren’t what were used to seeing from Embiid. In his 2022-23 MVP season Embiid averaged 33.1 points and 10.2 rebounds playing in more than 65 games for only the second time in his career and averaging a career-best 34.6 minutes.
Embiid missed more than half of last season and has played in just 57 games the last two years. The team’s reliance on him is immeasurable and when he doesn’t perform the team usually follows suit. Embiid recently said his surgically repaired knee isn’t completely healed causing him to play below his standards. Against the Nets he was just 4 of 14 shooting for 14 points and he missed all six three-point attempts. Five times during the 7-game slide the Sixers had their big three of Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey on the floor so I guess that can’t be used as an excuse.
The Sixers have been a money pit against the NBA betting line having the second-worst cover rate in the Association at 35.2 percent thanks to their eight-game ATS losing streak. And they aren’t much better in road games with a 10-16-1 ATS record. If there is a silver lining for the Sixers it’s that the road team has won each of the last five meetings in the series. Unfortunately four of those games were played in Philadelphia.
At 37-20 the Knicks have the third-best record in the Eastern Conference with a comfortable bulge over fourth-place Indiana. However, based on their results against the two best teams in the East the Knicks are unlikely to move up any further. New York entered the All-Star break on a roll winning nine of 11 games and opened the second half with an OT triumph over Chicago. Playing Cleveland and Boston on the road after that put the Knicks back in the realm of reality.
The Knicks were destroyed 142-105 by the Cavs on Friday night and didn’t fare much better against the Celtics on Sunday falling 118-105 despite getting at least 20 points each from Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart. Against those teams the Knicks are 0-4 SU and ATS. They have cleaned up against the rest of the conference going 26-9 with a pair of wins and payouts against the Sixers.
Though the offense sputtered in the last two games scoring just 105 points in each, it has been an area of strength for the most part. The Knicks boast one of the most efficient groups with four players averaging more than 16 points. They are a top 5 unit averaging nearly 118 points while shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 37.4 percent from deep. They averaged 118 points in the last three games with the Sixers and cashed the OVER on the NBA odds in three of the last four.
