January 3, 2023Big East Futures Odds Betting – UConn Reps the Cream of the Crop
January 4, 2023
The ACC futures odds aren’t necessarily playing out the way linemakers at BetRivers Sportsbook envisioned at the outset of the 2022-23 college basketball betting season. The national runner-up North Carolina Tar Heels initially hit the board as +135 odds-on favorites to win the regular season title, but Hubert Davis’ kids have gotten out to a poor 9-5 SU start that’s already seen Armando Bacot and co. drop two games in conference play. Their odds of coming back to win the title chime in at 6-1 after opening a near coin flip.
Instead, it’s been Jim Larranaga’s Miami Hurricanes that’ve been the team to beat after going 13-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in ACC play. But does that make the Canes the team to beat moving forward? Let’s put the current futures odds under the microscope and see if we can’t come up with three teams to add to our college hoops futures portfolio. The following are my favorite, underdog, and longshot selections to get involved with as we enter the New Year.

Favorite to Bet: Duke +275
Though the Blue Devils are now being overlooked by a rookie head coach in Jon Scheyer, I’m still digging what the reigning regular season champions are bringing to the court game in and game out. While multiple pieces to last year’s Final Four team have since departed, the Dookies still have a formidable team at their disposal. The offense has been a problem area with it averaging fewer than 74 points per game, but it’s still been efficient in ranking No. 22 overall in adjusted efficiency per KenPom.
Where this team separates itself however is at the defensive end of the court where it’s ranked No. 30 in efficiency and allows just over 60 points per game. It’s also been a beast on the glass with newcomers Kyle Filipowski and Ryan Young combining for nearly 16 caroms per game. Once the offense comes around – and it will – Duke will be in a position to take bragging rights home a second straight year.
Underdog to Bet: Virginia Tech +3000
VTECH getting out to a slow start in ACC play sets up a buying window on Mike Young’s kids in my opinion. This is a team that went 19-12 SU a season ago and struggled in conference play managing a pedestrian 11-9 SU record. Even so, it still went on to punch a ticket to the NCAA Tournament by way of winning the ACC tourney after smashing the Dookies in the title game. Tourney MVP Hunter Cattoor is back for his senior campaign as is Justyn Mutts and Grant Basile with the trio combining for 36.8 points and 17.7 rebounds per game. Stirring the entire drink is sophomore Sean Pedulla who rounds out the double-digit scorers with a team-high 17.4 points and 4.3 assists per game.
Most attractive about the Hokies is its ability to finally put the biscuit in the basket. Last year’s squad struggled mightily to do so in averaging fewer than 70 points a game. Through 14 played games, Virginia Tech is averaging over 75 points per game to rank No. 25 overall in efficiency per KenPom. Once the defense comes around – and it will – the Hokies will be a tough out for all that stands in their way.
Longshot to Bet: Syracuse +8000
While the Orange have played to a laughable schedule to get out to a 3-1 start in ACC play taking out the dregs at the bottom of the heap, Jim Boeheim’s kids always seem to flip a switch the closer we get to March. After missing out on the Dance a season ago, Syracuse once again has the look of a team that will lace its dancing shoes up come Selection Sunday. I’m a fan of the seniors on this squad. Joseph Girard III is a scorer that averages nearly 17.0 points a game and drains the 3-ball at a 37.1 percent clip. Big man Jesse Edwards commands the paint by ripping down over 11 boards while adding nearly 14 points a game. Freshman Judah Mintz never leaves the court and has made an immediate impact in the starting lineup averaging 15.8 a game while dishing out a team-high 4.2 assists per game.
Winners in seven of eight (5-3 ATS), we’ll get a better feel as to how this team rates out in the coming weeks with games scheduled to go @Virginia, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, and @Miami. You can bet your bottom dollar they won’t be offering up an 80-1 return even if they only manage a split of those contests. There’s simply too much value at the current offering not to throw a beer money investment on this squad just in case the trio is for real!
