Two years after Arizona legalized sports betting, operators that had been barred from the state will once again have the opportunity to offer wagering thanks to a decision by the Arizona Department of Gaming to reopen the application process. The Arizona legislation set a limit on the number of event wagering licenses at 20 when sports betting became legal in April 2021, with 10 licenses allotted to the state’s tribes and professional clubs. While all 10 tribal licenses were granted, only two of the licenses associated with professional sports franchises were not claimed.
Since then, the market has shifted, with some operators going out of business and others combining, leaving the Ak-Chin Tribe—which had originally collaborated with Fubo Sportsbook for digital betting—without a partner. The Ak-Chin Tribe, which had a retail sports betting partnership with Harrah’s (Caesars), is no longer listed as having a license on the ADG page.
The new environment might provide an opening for Fanatics Sportsbook, which is acquiring PointsBet, to enter the state. The deal’s opening phase is scheduled to close on August 31. The Yavapai-Apache Nation, which initially received an Arizona license that was revoked in 2021, has a collaboration with PointsBet. While PointsBet operates in more than 15 U.S. states, Fanatics Sportsbook is now live in a restricted capacity in Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Tennessee.
