Mexico Open at Vidanta Odds and Picks
February 20, 2024Mexico Open at Vidanta Matchup Picks
February 21, 2024A chalk favorite cashed in on the World Series betting odds three straight times up until last season when the Texas Rangers (+5000) snapped a six-year playoff drought by coming from out of nowhere to punch a wild-card ticket. From there, Bruce Bochy – in his first season as manager – led Adolis Garcia and Co. to 13 wins and just four losses to bring the Commissioner’s Trophy home to Arlington for the first time in the franchise’s 63-year history. The World Series futures betting market currently looks bearish on the Rangers repeating with their odds of doing so getting longer since first hitting the board at Caesars Sportsbook. It does however look to be bullish on a number of other teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, Orioles, Cubs, Reds, Giants, Tigers, and Royals when gauging futures odds line movement since first post. Regardless, the following are my favorite, underdog, and longshot World Series futures odds investments I’ve already thrown my hard-earned money on for the upcoming MLB betting season and suggest you do the same.

Favorite to Bet: Houston Astros +900
With MLB bettors giving the Yankees and Dodgers World Series futures odds most of the early attention, it’s the Houston Astros that continue to lie in the weeds and keep receipts. Though Dusty Baker will no longer be calling the shots and rookie manager Joe Espada has taken over the helm, I don’t expect much in the way of regression occurring for this franchise that once again improved itself in the offseason. Houston has punched a playoff ticket in eight of the last nine baseball betting seasons, and enters 2024 as +110 favs to win the AL West for the fourth straight season at Caesars Sportsbook.
Jose Altuve just inked a new contract that should find him in Astros dark blue and orange the remainder of his career. Yordan Alvarez – fresh off a 31 home run campaign through 114 games – is back to DH and play the outfield. Alex Bregman and Jeremy Pena remain at third and shortstop respectively, while big things are expected from Yainer Diaz behind the dish with his playing time expected increase. And let us not forget about Kyle Tucker!
A healthy Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr. return to bring even more depth to a starting staff anchored by Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez that accrued the fifth most quality starts a season ago. The cherry on top is the league’s sixth best bullpen that only got stronger with the addition of Josh Hader who was signed to a 4-year deal in the offseason. Provided key parts to the roster avoid the injury bug, there’s no reason to believe the Astros won’t be players in the AL West, American League, and World Series futures odds race the entirety of the 2024 campaign.
Underdog to Bet: Cincinnati Reds +4000
MLB bettors got a taste of what this young up-and-coming squad brought to the table last season when the Cincinnati Reds fought tooth and nail with the Brewers and Cubs for division bragging rights until late-season injuries put an end to that. My bankroll personally loved every second of the rebirth in the Queen City and I can’t wait to see what this club has in store for us in act two with youngsters like Matt McLain, T.J. Friedl, Will Benson, and Elly De La Cruz out to prove last season wasn’t a fluke.
While the offense took a major step forward in averaging 4.8 runs per game (#9), the pitching staff left much to be desired. Hunter Greene gave up way too many hits (8.9) and walks (3.9) per innings pitched, and took a step back because of it. If the ‘Natti is to become a legit contender in the NL Central let alone compete on the World Series futures odds, it must get the pitching up to snuff. While very little was done in the offseason to shore up that liability, my hope is that the Reds are enough of a factor as is by the trade deadline that it forces GM Nick Krall’s hand to bring in the veteran help that could catapult this team into one of MLB’s elites.
Longshot to Bet: Pittsburgh Pirates +15000
Sober Mike doesn’t think the Pittsburgh Pirates have a shot in you know what of winning the World Series let alone punching a ticket to the playoffs (+550). Mike with a few cocktails in him would like to believe there’s an alternate universe for a small market team like the Buccos to not only win the unexceptional NL Central (+1800), but make some real noise in the postseason should that ticket be punched in at Caesars Sportsbook. Even with Oneil Cruz only getting nine games under his belt before the injury bug derailed his 2023 campaign, the Pirates still went on to win 14 more games than the prior season to smash its 67.5-game season win total odds. They did so with a below average offense (#22), middle of the road starting staff (#16), and below average bullpen (#19).
Regardless, it posted the third-best record in the division (25-27) en route to playing near .500 ball both at home (39-42) and on the road (37-44). I like the mix of veteran and young talent on this roster heading into the 2024 MLB betting season. Ke’Bryan Hayes is coming off his best season as a pro. Cruz is a one-man wrecking ball that can do it all. Mitch Keller just put forth a career-year and enters his age 28 season. David Bednar is arguably the best closer in the game. The pieces are there for this roster to turn some heads this year. I like the additions of veteran arms Marco Gonzalez, Martin Perez, and Aroldis Chapman. Adding the latter to Bednar and Colin Holderman finds Pittsburgh owners of one of the better bullpens in the Bigs! I likely had one too many Crowns while banging this blurb out, but I’m confidently throwing a beer money flier at the Buccos and fully expect them to put us in a position to at the very least hedge this ticket in the near future. Keep the Crown away from me if they actually snap an 8-year playoff drought!
