August 6, 2024Big 12 Title Odds and Picks
August 7, 2024The Ohio State Buckeyes are favored to win the Big 10 title this season. It won’t be easy for Ohio State, as they are expected to get a strong challenge from Big 10 newcomer Oregon. The Buckeyes are listed at odds of +135 at Caesars while the Ducks are +200. The three darkhorse candidates are the Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan Wolverines and USC Trojans. Perhaps the Iowa Hawkeyes and Nebraska Cornhuskers could be considered darkhorses, but they are definitely behind the top five teams. Let’s look at Big 10 title odds and Big 10 title picks.

Favorites
Ohio State Buckeyes +135
Ohio State has a clear mission this season and that is to win the Big 10 title and to beat Michigan. Head coach Ryan Day has had enough of losing to the Wolverines and this should be the year he gets Ohio State over the hump. The Wolverines won’t have Jim Harbaugh as head coach and the Buckeyes return a ton of talent. Ohio State returns nine starters from a defense that was great last season and they brought in Kansas State transfer Will Howard to play quarterback. The backfield is loaded with Mississippi transfer Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson.
Oregon Ducks +200
The team that could challenge Ohio State is Oregon and the Ducks did really well in the transfer portal. Head coach Dan Lanning brings in quarterback Dillon Gabriel to lead the offense. The Ducks have two All-America receivers in Evan Stewart and Tez Johnson and they boast Jordan James and Noah Whittington at running back. The defense will be counting on a number of transfers, and if the defense comes together, the Ducks will be tough to beat.
Darkhorse Contenders
Penn State Nittany Lions +550
Penn State has underperformed under head coach James Franklin. If he doesn’t get the Nittany Lions into the expanded 12-team playoff then his time at Penn State could be over. The team will have a new offensive coordinator in Andy Kotelnicki who comes over from Kansas. Quarterback Drew Allar has played well at times, but he needs to do better in big games. Tight end Tyler Warren and Ohio State transfer Julian Fleming should lead the way at receiver, while Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen lead the running attack. The defense also has a new coordinator in Tom Allen who comes over from Indiana.
Michigan Wolverines +600
New head coach Sherrone Moore has his work cut out for him. Michigan has just five returning starters, mostly on defense. The defense should be fine under new coordinator Wink Martindale but the offense is a concern. The Wolverines will probably go with Alex Orji at quarterback and he will be handing the ball off a lot to Donovan Edwards.
USC Trojans +1600
It was a down year for the Trojans a year ago under Lincoln Riley even though he had Caleb Williams at quarterback. The defense last season was awful, so a change was needed and in comes D’Anton Lynn from UCLA. The offense will be led by Miller Moss but he could be pushed by UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava. The Bruins also boast receiver Zachariah Branch and running back Woody Mark.
Longshots
If you really want to stretch, perhaps you could put Iowa and Nebraska in the darkhorse category. Iowa is going to be good again on defense but since the Big 10 is no longer two divisions, the Hawkeyes are unlikely to make the Big 10 title game in 2024. The offense will have a new coordinator in Tim Lester and the offense can’t be any worse than it was a year ago. Cade McNamara or Northwestern transfer Brendan Sullivan figure to lead the way at quarterback for the Hawkeyes.
Nebraska should be in for a good year under head coach Matt Rhule. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola is expected to lead the offense with transfers helping him out in running back Dante Dowdell from Oregon and receiver Jahmal Banks from Wake Forest. The defense was good last year, holding opponents to 18.3 points per game and it could be even better this season with a number of starters returning.
The rest of the teams are going to struggle. Washington is in for a rude awakening in the Big 10, while Wisconsin could have one of their worst seasons in the Big 10. There is no real hope for Maryland, UCLA, Rutgers, Northwestern, Michigan State, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue and Indiana.
Big 10 Title Pick
This should be the season that Ohio State wins the Big 10. Oregon is going to be a real threat, but I lean to the Buckeyes, as they look to be loaded on both sides of the ball. None of the other teams holds much appeal, but if I had to pick a longshot, I would take USC, as I still believe Lincoln Riley is a good coach and USC’s defense will be better.Make your college football bets right now at Caesars.
