NBA Picks – Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks
January 24, 2023Mountain West Futures Odds Betting
January 25, 2023We checked in on the Big East a couple weeks back when UConn was kicking butt and taking names. That’s no longer the case with Dan Hurley and the Huskies only just recently snapping a three-game slide by pounding Butler into submission over the weekend. Going by the current odds to win the regular season title over at BetRivers Sportsbook, this conference looks to be as top heavy as it gets with none of Villanova, Seton Hall, St. John’s, DePaul, Butler, or Georgetown seemingly having what it takes to contend with the cream of the crop.
As such, it’s a five-team race to bragging rights so let’s break ‘em all down and see if any currently offer up any kind of value worthy of adding to our conference futures odds portfolio.

Xavier -112
I recommended getting yourself a piece of the Musketeers at +400 when first breaking down the Big East futures odds week’s back. Since then, Sean Miller’s kids have rattled off wins in four of five played games with wins against the college basketball odds logged against Creighton and Marquette. The offense continues to be tremendous with the starting five of Souley Boum, Jack Nunge, Zach Freemantle, Adam Kunkel, and Colby Jones representing the nation’s sixth most efficient offense per KenPom.
However, the depth is lacking and the defense isn’t of championship caliber. So long as the offensive playmakers never foul out, Xavier can win the whole enchilada. I’m bearish on that ultimately playing out though.
Marquette +150
Shaka Smart’s kids have seemingly come from out of nowhere to log a 16-5 overall record which includes wins tallied in eight of 10 conference tussles. This team sported the fourth longest odds to win the Big East at the season’s outset.
Unfortunately, all the value has been sucked out of the futures odds at the current price point. But that doesn’t mean CBB bettors can’t still make out backing the Golden Eagles on a gamely basis. Kameron Jones and his mates certainly deserve your attention regardless of the team’s two conference losses coming on the road to both Xavier and Providence.
Creighton +600
The Bluejays hammered Seton Hall 83-61 and covered as 8.5-point favorites when I last reported on the conference. I recommended then to buy some of Greg McDermott’s kids at a 6-1 return. Then it went out and dropped back-to-back contests at Connecticut and Xavier – insert mad emoji! Regardless, this is still a team you want to own shares of moving forward – wherever the rate of return clocks in at!
The BJs are very similar to the Musketeers in that a high percentage of damage done to the opposition is administered by the starting five. The team’s not deep whatsoever. But with Ryan Kalkbrenner healthy and back in the middle clogging up the paint, Creighton will continue being an incredibly tough out. I’m still buying a small piece at this offering!
Providence +1500
Ed Cooley led the Friars to their first ever Big East regular season title a season ago. It was a charmed year for the program who went on to fall to the eventual national champion Kansas Jayhawks in the Midwest Region Semifinals. This year’s squad has picked right back up where it left off with Bryce Hopkins and his mates coming up winners in 15 of 20 played games which includes a solid 7-2 record in Big East play. Almost equally efficient at both ends of the court and owning the best depth of the conference favorites, the Friars deserve a seat at the table.
But when the cards are thrown down, I worry about the team’s ability to win away from the Pavilion. As such, I’m not buying at the current offering.
UConn +2100
At one point this season, UConn was looked upon as a bonafide national championship contender. I even recommended buying the Huskies when they clocked in as -175 favorites to win the Big East regular season title at BetRivers three weeks ago. Since then, Dan Hurley’s troops managed just a pair of wins and point spread covers in their last six games to fall to 5-5 in conference play. The Huskies remain the Pomeroy Ratings sixth ranked team even after all that which is extremely telling.
I expect it to be nothing but a blip on the radar, and fully expect Jordan Hawkins (15.5 PPG) and Adama Sanogo (17.2 PPG/7.1 RPG) to get this team back into high gear starting as soon as Wednesday night with Xavier traveling to Gampel Pavilion for the rematch. The recent underperformance paired with the schedule that lies ahead makes this 21-1 offering nothing short of laughable. Marquette and Providence also still have to come to Storrs – BUY NOW!
