BetMGM said that sports betting in North Carolina has been a “smash success” since it began earlier this week. The first wager every made in North Carolina was a $100 wager to win $1,800 on North Carolina at +1800 to win the NCAA Tournament. Almost 50% of the future bets were placed on the Tar Heels to win the NCAA Tournament. Connecticut received about 10% of wagers, while Houston received 8%.
Sports bettors are already planning placing Super Bowl future bets. Roughly 14% of bettors are placing their money on the Steelers, 10% on the Eagles, and 10% on the Chiefs. The home team Carolina Panthers received 8.3% of NFL futures wagers at BetMGM. Those wagers are likely throwing money away considering that the Panthers presently have the longest odds to win the Super Bowl, per BetMGM.
A few weeks ago, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission declared that gambling on computers and mobile devices would start at noon on Monday. This was done in accordance with the June 2023 statute that authorized the games to license operators and define restrictions. Governor Roy Cooper, a devoted supporter of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced that he had bet on the team to win the Stanley Cup later this year. Cooper also signed the sports betting measure approved by the General Assembly into law. Any winnings, he claimed, will go to the team’s charity foundation.
Cooper declared, “The legalization of sports betting will provide a significant boost to North Carolina’s economy and will allow our thriving sports industry to continue to grow.” He also unveiled a video of himself taking the ice at the team’s Raleigh PNC Arena, which had been pre-filmed before the game started at noon.
On February 29, the commission declared the eight inaugural licensees. The next day, these operators started opening accounts and taking deposits from players who were at least 21 years old. Gambling companies have responded by putting out a wide range of broadcast and social media advertisements in an effort to entice consumers with cash incentives.
The original sports wagering licenses were awarded to BetMGM, DraftKings, Underdog Sports Wagering, bet365, ESPN Bet, FanDuel Sportsbook, and Fanatics Sportsbook, as well as to an organization connected to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, which, along with Caesars Sportsbook, already runs sports betting in-person at the tribe’s two casinos in western North Carolina and now provides mobile wagering. According to the lottery commission, all eight operators were active on Monday.
A late amendment to the 2023 law stated that in order to be granted a license, the majority of interactive wagering company applicants required to sign a contract with an in-state professional team, select pro golf or car racing sites, or regulating bodies. For instance, Fanatics Sportsbook is connected to the Hurricanes, while DraftKings has a deal with NASCAR.
Additionally, the bill permits in-person wagering at future sportsbooks, which would need to be situated at or close to specific sizable motorsports or sports venues. According to the commission, those will open when operators satisfy the necessary conditions, case by case. Future implementation of the law’s provisions granting the commission authority to oversee state-wide horse race wagering and establish guidelines for live horse racing is planned.
Sports betting will be subject to a tax under the new law that is equivalent to 18% of total betting revenue minus distributed winnings. A legislative branch estimate suggests that by five years, the income might surpass $100 million yearly.
A portion of the government’s allocation will support amateur and youth sports, treatment and education programs for gambling addiction, and athletic departments at 13 University of North Carolina system campuses. Some license holders have emphasized the features of their betting apps that promote “responsible gaming.”
