Canelo Alvarez will take on Dmitry Bivol on Saturday, May 7 for the WBA (Super) light heavyweight title. Alvarez is listed as a solid boxing favorite in this fight and that is not a surprise considering Alvarez is the most recognized name in boxing. He won by 8th round RTD against Billy Joe Saunders in May of last year, won by 3rd round RTD against Avri Yildirim in February of last year, won a unanimous decision against Callum Smith in December of 2020 and won by 11th round knockout against Sergey Kovalev in November of 2019.
Alvarez is set for a busy 2022, as he is expected to come back down in weight and take on Gennadiy Golovkin in September and then possibly face John Ryder in December. Alvarez says he is totally focused on Bivol who will have the height and reach advantage in this fight. Alvarez will have the edge in power and he may need it in this fight, as Bivol moves very well. “He’s a good fighter, and a difficult fighter too,” said Canelo to the media, “He’s a fighter that fights at a good distance, has a good distance, good moves, and he’s fast for the division. He won a unanimous decision against Craig Richards in May of last year, won a unanimous decision against Lenin Castillo in October of 2019, won a unanimous decision against Joe Smith Jr. in March of 2019 and won a unanimous decision against Jean Pascal in November of 2018.
Bivol said he is not bothered by being a big underdog in this fight and believes he can win. “First of all, Canelo has had close fights and has been beaten before.” Bivol said to the media, Every boxer has certain qualities and makes mistakes. My goal is to capitalize on those mistakes in the fight. I hope that everybody will tune it to watch the fight.”
