The interim WBC featherweight title will be on the line this weekend when Brandon Figueroa clashes with Mark Magsayo in southern California. Figueroa was previously a champion at super bantamweight, so he is a moderate favorite by the boxing betting odds in this fight. Magsayo is certainly a live underdog though as a former featherweight champion.
On Saturday, March 4, 2023, we will see Brandon Figueroa and Mark Magsayo square off in the main event of a SHOWTIME boxing event. This fight card is slated to start at 9 p.m. ET from Toyota Arena in Ontario, California, and the main event will likely start around 11 p.m. ET.

This has the makings of a great fight as both Brandon Figueroa and Mark Magsayo are known to bring the heat. Figueroa is 23-1-1 with 18 knockouts to his credit, while Magsayo is 24-1 with 16 knockouts. Both boxers have recent losses and know their purses will take significant hits with another defeat, so they should be aggressive from the start in their pursuit of the interim WBC featherweight belt.

We saw Brandon Figueroa become a professional fighter in May 2015. Figueroa knocked out seven of his first nine opponents, and he moved to 16-0 before fighting some of the biggest names at super bantamweight. He proved to be very impressive in knockouts of Oscar Escandon and Moises Flores, setting up a WBA super bantamweight title fight with Yonfrez Parejo.
The oddsmakers had little doubt that Figueroa would mop the floor with Parejo. They made Figueroa close to a -3000 favorite per the boxing betting line, and he completely controlled the action. He forced Parejo to retire at the end of the eighth round, and that set up a title defense against Javier Nicolas Chacon. Figueroa once again cruised to a victory in that bout, knocking Chacon out in the fourth round.
Unfortunately for Figueroa, his record took a hit in his next title defense. Although Figueroa kept the belt, he had to settle for a split decision draw against Julio Ceja. His opponent came in 4.5 pounds overweight, and that was tough for Figueroa to handle, and also it’s perhaps a warning bell that Ceja has not won a fight since November 2017.
Figueroa’s next title defenses were a lot easier as he knocked out both Damien Vazquez and Luis Nery. Vazquez was expected to be a pushover for Figueroa, but Nery was actually a favorite by the boxing odds prior to their fight. The champion was even on the scorecards with Nery before he stopped him in the seventh round with a series of body blows.
Stephen Fulton dealt Figueroa his first defeat in November 2021, winning a majority decision to claim both the WBC and WBO super bantamweight titles. That spurred a move to featherweight for Figueroa, and he cruised to a sixth-round knockout of Carlos Castro in July.
Mark Magsayo turned pro two years before Brandon Figueroa. Magsayo had no problem in his first 10 fights in the Philippines, and he won the IBF Youth Featherweight title belt in July 2015. He claimed the WBO Youth featherweight belt a few months later, and then Magsayo defeated Chris Avalos to take the WBO International featherweight title.
It was impressive to watch Magsayo successfully defend that title three times, and one of those title defenses was a first-round knockout. A knockout of Julio Ceja in August 2021 set up a title shot against Gary Russell Jr. in January 2022, and Magsayo made the most of that title opportunity by claiming the WBC featherweight belt with a majority decision win over Russell.
Sadly, success was short-lived for Magsayo. He was 24-0 before defending the title against Rey Vargas, and he lost a split decision to Vargas to surrender the belt.

This is going to be a very fun fight, but Figueroa has to be the play. He will catch Magsayo too many times as Figueroa has a whopping five-inch reach advantage. That’s simply too much for the underdog to overcome here.
