Catalunya Championship Picks

The DP World Tour stays in Spain this week for another new event, the Catalunya Championship. While the event is new, the course, PGA Catalunya has hosted a number of high-profile events, so players will have some familiarity. The first-ever European Tour event, the 1972 Spanish Open was held at PGA Catalunya. Last week’s winner, Pablo Larrazabal is listed as a lukewarm favorite at odds of 22-1. Venue: This event is held at PGA Catalunya which is a par 72 that measures 7,200 yards. It was co-designed by Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles. The Stadium Course has hosted four tournaments on the European Tour, the most recent in 2014 when it hosted the Spanish Open. This course features tree-lined fairways with water coming into play on five holes.

Pablo Larrazabal 22-1

The favorite last week in terms of golf betting went bust yet again, and this week it is last week’s winner, Pablo Larrazabal who gets the honor of favorite. I have made it a habit of going against last week’s winner on a regular basis in golf betting with pretty good success, so there is no way I want any part of Larrazabal this week in the role of favorite.

Value Picks

Bernd Wiesberger 25-1

Last week we saw Wiesberger listed at odds lower than this, so perhaps we get a little value this week. There is no question that Wiesberger knows how to win, as he has won eight times on the DP World Tour. The putting for Wiesberger is always a concern, but perhaps his putter will cooperate this week and there is no question he can do well on the par 5’s. I think Wiesberger has some value this week at these odds.

Adri Arnaus 33-1

I guess I am a glutton for punishment but I don’t want to miss out when Arnaus gets his first win and I think it could come this week. Arnaus is a good player and he is way overdue to get a win.

Laurie Canter 40-1

Canter is another player who I expect to get his first win soon. He nearly won in Portugal and he was in decent form last week when he finished in 30^th place. I expect a good step forward this week, as his play last week was after a break. This course should play to his strengths which are straight driving and good approach play. He has played this course well in the past and I think he can contend this week and we get him at big odds.

Romain Langasque 50-1

Last week it was ugly for Langasque on Thursday when he shot a 77, but he was very good in the second round when he shot a 65. Langasque was coming off a month break, so he should be ready to roll this week. He has played well on tough courses in the past and there is no question we are getting very nice odds this week.

Fabrizio Zanotti 80-1

Zanotti has been very consistent of late with a number of high finishes and he has made seven straight cuts. His putting has improved this season and he has played well on this course in the past. He is returning from a break, but he has played well in the past coming off rest.

Chris Wood 300-1

Why is Wood listed at such big odds? He was fifth on this course in Qualifying School in 2008 and he finished seventh in 2014 in the Open de Espana on this course. Wood is known for playing well on tough courses, so I’ll take a minor flyer on him at huge odds.
