CFB Futures – 2024 LSU Tigers Win Total Odds
July 23, 2024MLB Same Game Parlay Picks, Odds & Predictions – Thursday, July 25
July 23, 2024After just the fourth double-digit win season as a major college football program last year, the Memphis Tigers are poised for more with a number of returning starters and a watered down American Athletic Conference. The 2024 Tigers should be good; competing for the AAC championship and the non-power conference invite to the CFP. But they aren’t good enough to overlook opponents and take them for granted. What will propel the Tigers this season is their perceived snub from the Big 12 and proving they are a Power conference caliber squad something to strive for. Matching last year’s nine regular season wins seems like the low end for this group, which had its win total at BetMGM pegged at 9.
Regular Season Wins for the Memphis Tigers
Over 9 ( +105 )
Under 9 ( -125 )
The Tigers have been one of the most consist programs over the last decade with 10 straight non-losing seasons, despite coaches getting poached by Power teams. The run started with 10 wins in 2014 under Justin Fuente, who moved to Virginia Tech two years later, and continued for four years under Mike Norvell that included a program record 12 wins in 2019. Norvell was hired by Florida State after that season. Ryan Silverfield has continued the tradition and has what could be the best team in the program’s history.

Roster
For the last several years college football has been all about offense and scoring. The Tigers were invited to the party and did their best impersonation of a top 10 unit in 2023. They finished sixth nationally in scoring falling just short of the 40 point mark and had the ninth best passing attack averaging 306.5 yards. And the Tigers have the conductor of the offense back for another season. Throwing for 3,883 yards and 32 touchdowns last season, Seth Henigan is a rare breed in college football returning for a fourth season with the same program.
There are some areas that need to be addressed for the group to continue its mastery with the football. The line is down several starters from a season ago but transfers Jaylen Nichols and Trent Holler have the experience to make the group a bigger asset. Henigan had a strong relationship with receivers Roc Taylor and Blake Watson last year and the duo is back headlining a loaded group of pass catchers. Taylor led the team with 69 receptions and 1,083 yards while Watson had 53 grabs. The two combined for seven TD catches.
Running the football wasn’t a huge priority. The Tigers ranked 76th in the FBS averaging 152 yards last year and need to move forward without Blake Watson, who accounted for more than 57 percent of the team’s rushing yards. Sutton Smith, who was second with 305 rushing yards, will get more snaps and transfer Mario Anderson is expected to contribute. And don’t forget about Henigan, who has more than 700 rushing yards and nine TDs in his career.
Winning 10 games with the 111th ranked total defense tells you a few things about Memphis. The offense was really good and the schedule was light. And also, if the group tightens up a little bit the Tigers could be a whole lot better. Henigan and the offense should be solid and the schedule is once again manageable. Major additions on defense via the portal should make the unit better. The secondary has options and the linebackers got stronger with additions of Javante Mackey and Matt Hudson.
Schedule
With the realistic expectation of securing the automatic CFP berth, the Week 3 matchup at Florida State has implications. Not only are the Noles a powerhouse it’s a matchup against former coach Mike Norvell, who helped transform the Memphis program during his tenure. The Week 7 tilt at USF and the regular season finale at Tulane could be trouble, but both come after a bye. Outside the FSU game the non-conference slate shouldn’t be a problem and at the very least the Tigers should be playing for the AAC championship.
Prediction
The bar is raised in Memphis with nine wins looking like the absolute lowest number. Continuity in the coaching staff and at QB is only one positive for the Tigers. Toss in what’s a more than manageable schedule and expected improvements from the defense and the Tigers not only play for their first AAC title since 2019 they also have a path to the expanded CFP. With the recent defections of UCF, Cincinnati, Houston and SMU, the conference isn’t anywhere near what it was just a few years ago leaving Memphis as the class of the remaining programs.
