CFB Futures – 2024 North Carolina Tar Heels Win Total Odds
August 3, 2024CFB Futures – 2024 Oklahoma Sooners Win Total Odds
August 5, 2024Winning 11 regular season games the last two years has the Ohio State Buckeyes poised as another frontrunner in the college football landscape. And now that Jim Harbaugh is no longer coaching that team from the north OSU is looking for bigger things in an expanded playoff. The Buckeyes have been so close to being even better than their record over the last few years suggests and they have another loaded roster that will get them a chance at a national championship. But first they need to get the stench of three straight losses to Michigan out of their system. OSU cashed the OVER last year with little margin for error and for the second straight season their win total is set at 10.5. The Buckeyes are one of just a handful of teams with a double-digit total at BetMGM.
Regular Season Wins for the Ohio State Buckeyes
Over 10.5 ( -190 )
Under 10.5 ( +153 )
Since taking over the program late in the 2018 season, Ryan Day has won 87.5 percent of his games and the Buckeyes haven’t lost more than two games in any of those seasons. So, yeh, they’ve been good. Another sign of just how good OSU has been is the games they lost over that span. Three of those setbacks, and the most devastating, have been to Michigan teams that were among CFB’s elite. There was a loss to Clemson in the 2019 CFP semifinals and to Alabama in the 2020 season national championship game. All eight defeats were to teams that finished with at least 10 wins and three were to teams that won the national title the year they played.

Roster
This is an extreme hypothetical but one that gives you a good idea of how good the Buckeyes have been over the last decade. If the new expanded 12-team college football playoff was in place since the beginning, OSU is the only squad that would’ve been included every year. What makes the 2024 campaign interesting is that plenty of talent returns after a bummer of a close to last season, and those players are itching to make up for it. The addition of several offensive play-makers means the offense will keep humming and could be even better than what we’ve seen with Chip Kelly now handling play-calling duties.
There was a falloff in production last year, at least in terms of what OSU had done in the past. They led the Big Ten averaging 407.9 yards but finished 48th nationally. They also ranked third in the conference scoring 30.5 points a game but ranked 46th in the FBS. In an attempt to raise those numbers in steps Kelly and veteran starting quarterback Will Howard. With 27 starts in four years at Kansas State, Howard has the experience in a winning program. He threw for 2,643 yards last season with 24 TD passes. Howard will be surrounded by a strong group of running backs and receivers.
Leading rusher TreVeyon Henderson is back after averaging nearly six yards a carry last season. He hit paydirt 11 times and also had 19 receptions for 229 yards. Quinshon Judkins is another weapon. He rushed for 2,725 yards and 31 TDs at Ole Miss the last two seasons. Marvin Harrison Jr. is off to the NFL leaving Emeka Egbuka as the No. 1 option on the outside. He had 41 catches for 515 yards and four scores a season ago.
The defense is going to be every bit as scary as it was in 2023. Seven starters are back from a squad that ranked second in the country allowing an average of just 11.2 points. They were No. 1 against the pass and fourth nationally in total defense. All four starters on the line have next level potential and are a nightmare for opposing QBs.
Schedule
A non-conference slate that has Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall all visiting the Horseshoe sets up the Buckeyes well for the expanded Big Ten. There is no USC, Wisconsin or Washington on the slate with the only potential pitfalls coming on the road against Oregon in Week 7 and Penn State in Week 10. Games with Iowa in Week 6 and Nebraska in Week 9 are in Columbus. That is, of course, until the regular season finale against Michigan.
Prediction
Other than possibly the matchups at Oregon and Penn State, there really are no games you’d expect the Buckeyes to lose. They are so deep and so talented that even injuries to key players won’t slow them down too much. I’m always skeptical backing teams with little margin for error and laying the juice on the OVER in this CFB futures bet is expensive. But damn, I can see the Buckeyes winning 11 games and possibly running the table into the Big Ten title game.
